Manipal’s high-quality medical studies

-

MANIPAL has been synonymous with high-quality medical education since the 1960s.

For many Malaysians, it was the favoured destination for a superior education in medicine, dentistry and even engineering.

Manipal University India, the parent institution for Melaka-Manipal Medical College (MMMC), celebrated being ranked No.1 among private universities of India, in the Education World India Private University Rankings 2017 and Best Universities Survey 2017 (The Week).

MMMC was established 20 years ago and it is now known as one of the best medical schools in Malaysia, providing high quality medical professionals to the Malaysian health system.

In fact, MMMC’s reputation has spread far and wide with many of its alumni spread across the globe.

Its reputation stems from its drive towards excellence in the services it provides to students, with its record of awards and accolades showcasing its accomplishments.

MMMC’s programmes are unique in that the twinning feature requires students to go to India first, before returning to Malaysia for clinical training in Malaysian general hospitals.

This is reverse of the usual practice of twinning programmes in Malaysia and ensures MMMC students get the best of two worlds.

Manipal has one of the largest Anatomy and Pathology museums in the world and it is deemed one of the best museums in Asia with over a thousand dissected specimens on display.

The students perform real cadaver dissections during their learning at Manipal.

It lays an excellent foundation in basic sciences for the first phase of their studies in Manipal, India.

This is reinforced with thorough clinical training in Malaysian hospitals during the second phase.

MMMC commenced with the first batch of MBBS students in 1997 – since then almost 3,500 graduates have passed through its corridors up to July this year.

MMMC doctors are performing with distinction within the Malaysian health system and many have advanced to the postgraduate level.

To complement the success of the medical programme, dentistry was introduced in 2009 and MMMC seems set to pursue the self-imposed high standards in dental education, too.

If the numbers clamouring for the programme is any indication, it seems that the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) is set to be another winner for MMMC.

Leveraging on Manipal’s reputation in India as the top dental school, MMMC has modelled a winner.

To improve the chances for entry into the very popular BDS, applicants are advised to sign up for their Foundation in Science programme (FiS).

MMMC’s FiS is a one-year pre-university course completed solely in the Melaka campus amid the serene surroundings of Bukit Baru.

MMMC’s Foundation course is unique and built to prepare students for the MBBS and BDS undergraduate degrees.

The inclusion of subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, and Oral Biology at Foundation level provides a better insight into these subjects, while preparing the students for the undergraduate programme.

Despite the rigours and intensity of the course, it is promising to note that the FiS has a remarkable success rate of 95% and above.

Students who have been through the foundation have found that the solid groundwork in the FiS has made for a steeper learning curve when they eventually move on to their degree studies.

Incentive for parents who would like their children to obtain the Manipal University degree is that the FiS student is given top priority into MMMC’s MBBS and BDS programmes.

With a hallmark of academic excellence and an enviable record of accomplishment in providing quality medical and dental education, MMMC is committed to providing a curriculum that offers diverse learning opportunities.

The commitment to excellence is one that is “Inspired by Life” and tempered by ethical service to the nation and humanity.

Online application can now be submitted for the 2018 intakes via www.manipal.edu/melaka.
