Getting a good night’s sleep

- Getha.com.my

SCIENTIFIC research has linked poor slumber with all kinds of health problems, from weight gain to a weakened immune system.

When lack of quality sleep becomes drastic, the brain activity is severely impaired.

Below is a list of high-risk outcomes due to poor quality sleep:

1. Weakened immune system.

Lack of sleep can impair your body’s ability to fight off illness, making it easier to get sick. Researchers even uncovered a reciprocal relationship between sleep and your immune system – you may also lose additional sleep while your body is occupied with fighting off a bug while ill.

2. Your risk for chronic disease increases.

Shortened sleep is associated with higher rates of breast cancer, colorectal cancer, diabetes and prostate cancer. In a study, researchers examined 10 separate studies focused on sleep and diabetes with findings revealing that minimum seven hours’ rest is the optimal range to avoid insulin issues that could lead to diabetes.

3. You gain weight.

A study by Turkish researchers examining the relationship between sleep and weight in over 21,469 adults over age 20 showed that people who slept less than five hours each night over the course of the three-year study were more likely to gain weight and eventually become obese. Those who slept between seven and eight hours fared better on the scale.

4. You are accident-prone.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, you are three times more likely to be involved in a car accident if you get six or fewer hours of sleep each night.

5. Your looks suffer.

Poor sleep can lead to more fine lines, furrows, uneven skin colour and looseness of skin. One study conducted on a group of people between ages 30 and 50 found those with poor sleep showed greater signs of ageing and dullness. Furthermore, these poor sleepers were also more dissatisfied with their appearance than their well-rested counterparts.
