DIY methods to create a bigger kitchen
DO you have a tiny kitchen where you can barely turn around while you’re cooking?
If so, you may be tempted to build out – or move!
But before you do anything drastic, consider these tips to optimise your space.
1. Use an over-the-sink cutting board
You can buy a fancy one in a kitchen shop or you can make your own by going to a timber mill and asking them to give you a pretty cut of wood.
Make it thick, sand it, oil it and make sure it’s 5cm longer on both sides of your sink and 5cm to 7cm narrower.
That way it is stable, and you can push things off the top edge into the sink when you’re working.
2. Look for blank wall space and see what you can hang there
For example, if there is a gap between the top kitchen cupboard and the counter top, hang a spice rack or fit in hooks so you can hang your coffee cups.
3. Use the inside of your cupboard doors
If you look inside your fridge, you will notice the door has handy built-in compartments.
Take advantage of this type of design by looking at your kitchen cupboard doors.
Adding a few hooks means you can store light items such as whisks and strainers on the door.
4. Wicker baskets
Try suspending a wicker basket from a crossbeam in the corner over your washing machine and store light items like dishcloths, kitchen sponges, kitchen roll, etc. A round wicker basket is pretty but a cylindrical or square one that is fitted on its side is easier to work with.
