FOR busy parents, established b schools such as Kolej Tuanku Ja are an excellent educational ch opportunities abound and supp available in almost every facet of a young person’s development.

A boarding school’s routines, rules and structure provide a safe, secure and supportive environment where young people can learn, thrive and sometimes make mistakes.

KTJ is a member of the Council of British International Schools, Federatio International Schools in Asia, Council of International Schools, Boarding Schools’ Association, and Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference.

Membership of such bodies underlines KTJ’s commitment to the highest internationally recognised standards in all areas of education, management and pastoral care.

As a houseparent of 17 years, I am certain that boarding schools change young people for the better – they develop self-confidence, independence, decision-making skills, adaptability, tolerance and problem-solving abilities.

Boarding affords multiple leadership opportunities and offers extended learning opportunities, including social, artistic and sporting ones.

Living in an international, multiracial and multi-ethnic environment that celebrates both equality and differences is empowering for students. Boarding is also the perfect stepping stone prior to pursuing foundation or undergraduate studies overseas.

One of the biggest fears of prospective relationship with their sons or daughters. In my experience, the opposite is true.

As they grow older, youngsters need their own space to be themselves and establish independence. I believe boarding allows them to do this.

In addition, many boarders in my care have very strong bonds with their families as they look forward to spending quality time together during weekends.

Teenagers who want to perform, debate, play sports, play music, work for charities, make our world more sustainable, learn new skills, establish new clubs or generally improve themselves will thrive in a busy boarding environment.

The strong sense of community and rightmindedness among young people within a boarding environment is something that cannot easily be replicated beyond it. It needs to be experienced to be fully understood. – By John Hughes, director of boarding at KTJ
