UM exhibits its Sudirman archives

THE late Datuk Sudirman Haji Arshad is the subject of a mini exhibition at his alma mater Universiti Malaya (UM) in Kuala Lumpur.

The exhibition, titled One Thousand Million Smiles ,isabrief survey of his pop career and it also highlights Sudirman’s time reading law in UM.

The exhibition is being held at the UM library until May 25.

It includes interestin­g exhibits, from UM’s library archives and other sources, like Sudirman's thesis for his law degree at UM in 1980, his albums, posters as well as archival material and newspaper articles published on him.

Sudirman, known as the “singing lawyer”, started his law studies at UM in 1976 and he received his degree four years later. He was called to the Malaysian Bar and was appointed as a practising lawyer in 1984, though he left due to lack of interest.

“This exhibition is to remember him as an alumnus of UM with an extraordin­ary talent,” says Shamsiah Abu Bakar, UM's deputy chairman of Library Exhibition­s.

Shamsiah adds that the exhibition which was open to the public includes a timeline of Sudirman's achievemen­ts and music contributi­ons.

She says that today's youth should emulate Sudirman's principles and attitudes as he had succeeded in education as well as an entertaine­r.

The Temerloh, Pahang-born Sudirman won the Best Performer title at the Asia Music Awards 1989 held at Royal Albert Hall in London.

During his singing career, he produced 18 albums in Malay and English.

The late singer also starred in a film Kami in 1983.

One Thousand Million Smiles exhibition is open weekdays (8am-10pm) and weekends (9am-4pm). FB: The University of Malaya Library.
