SCORING high in the Cambridge A-Levels examination is a feat worthy of respect worldwide and several students at KDU

Penang University

College (KDU Penang) showed their mettle recently.

Among the top scorers of the November 2017 examination series was Tan Shin Jie, who scored an A* each in Chemistry and Physics, and an A each for Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

Lok Yong Hui bagged an A* each for Chemistry and Physics, and an A each for Mathematics and Biology.

Lee Wei Jun struck a triple A* achievement in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics, while Heng Soon Chien also pocketed three A* in Physics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

With these results, the students have their sights aimed at entering some of the most prestigious universities in the world, said KDU Penang Centre for Pre-University Studies (CPUS) head Heng Chai Yen.

Chai Yen said KDU Penang’s A-Levels programme lasts for a year and a half and scoring straight As and the coveted A* in Cambridge A-Levels was a worldwide mark of achievement for any student.

“The Cambridge A-Levels qualification is accepted worldwide. It is a purely external examination wherever you take it in the world and it is accepted by practically all universities.”

This latest batch of KDU Penang’s high A-Levels scorers said they planned to start applying to some of the best universities in the world and hoped to be accepted by one of them.

At KDU Penang’s biannual Appreciation Party for A-Level students recently, Tan said he had not set his mind on what he planned to study but given his results, a science degree would be the logical choice to pursue.

“I’m grateful to my KDU Penang lecturers. They inspired me to love the beauty of sciences and mathematics. Looking back at my journey in KDU Penang, it was truly amazing, thanks to all my friends and lecturers. I’m also thankful for all the wonderful facilities that KDU Penang provided,” he said.

Lok had also begun “shopping” for a science degree.

“A-Levels isn’t easy, but good learning starts with a conducive environment and that was exactly what KDU Penang provided.”

Lee and Heng, who both scored 3 A*, attributed their success to their lecturers’ dedication and inspiration.

According to Heng, “KDU’s lecturers are not only highly qualified in their fields of expertise with extensive experience but also very helpful. I wish to thank three of my lecturers, Mr Yap Oi Jiong, Dr Low Chee Soon and Dr Low Khee Lam.”

Lee said, “We have dedicated lecturers who not only provide a holistic approach to teaching but also inspire us to develop ourselves beyond the classroom.”

In CPUS, students are provided with an environment conducive to learning and extensive resources, supported by qualified and experienced lecturers, to help them learn and excel in their academic endeavours.

CPUS has also introduced a Student Enrichment Program that aims to help students develop their confidence, competence and commitment – three qualities that are essential for success in life.
