SUNWAY College A-Level students once again achieved excellent results in the November 2017 Cambridge Assessment International Examination.

A total 116 students achieved straight A’s or A*s, where 72 scored straight A’s or A*s in all four subjects and 44 scored A or A* in all three subjects taken.

The students of this cohort also achieved a 100% pass rate.

In recognition of the students’ exemplary examination results, the college hosted a High Achievers Award ceremony to celebrate with the students and their parents.

Attending the award ceremony was Masleyaton Yahya, who flew in from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, to celebrate her son Azamuddin Dzulkifli’s achievements.

“We decided to send him to Sunway College because we want him to be a more all-rounded person and be more independent,” said Masleyaton.

She added that she wants her son to have more exposure in a bigger college before he furthers his studies in university.

The former student of SM All Saints, Kota Kinabalu, scored 3A* and 1A in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

Recalling his experience with the A-Level programme at Sunway College, Azamuddin said, “The programme is a challenge. It does not matter if you are smart or not because you still have to work hard and put in a lot of effort (to achieve good results).”

He added this allowed him to discover his strengths and weaknesses in the subjects taken.

A recipient of the Jeffrey Cheah Entrance Scholarship, Azamuddin hopes to pursue his undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

He has also received offers from Cardiff University and the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom.

Mok Siao Chi from Catholic High School Petaling Jaya scored 4A* in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.

Sharing her experience, Mok encouraged students who are pursuing the A-Level programme to be consistent in their studies.

“Consistency is the key, but at the same time, enjoy your time with A-Level,” she said.

A Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA) scholar, Mok added that the A-Level is a rigorous programme that gave her opportunities to delve deep into her subjects.

“This helps me to have a strong foundation and be better prepared for my undergraduate studies in university,” said Mok who received a full scholarship from the University of Hong Kong to study Mathematics.

Another straight A student, Muhamad Lutfir Rahman Hamzam, shared that coming to Sunway College was a random choice at the beginning. However, as time passed, it became the best decision he made.

“I have the best lecturers and most of the lecturers here are very good,” said Muhamad who scored 4A* in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.

He plans to further his studies in biochemistry at McGill University, Canada.

“The A-Level is a difficult programme – you have to give your 110% in classes because that is where you will learn. After the classes, try to absorb the information and knowledge by going through the notes at home,” said Muhamad.

He is one of the four Malaysian representatives at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) held in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, in June last year.

Feeling happy with his results was Tan Jun Hao who also represented Malaysia at the IChO and took home a silver medal.

Achieving 4A* for Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, Tan shared that his results were better than he expected.

Tan encourages A-Level students to not just learn everything from textbooks.

“Try to learn more beyond textbooks and exams,” said the former student of SMK USJ 8.

Present at the award ceremony to celebrate the students’ achievements were Sunway College’s director of pre-university studies and Sunway International School’s executive director Cheng Mien Wee, Cambridge A-Level director Ruth Cheah, Sunway College’s Cambridge A-Level deputy director Irma Chan and lecturers of the A-Level programme.

The Cambridge General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCE A-Level) programme is one of the pre-university programmes offered at Sunway College since 1994.

The programme provides a bedrock of foundational knowledge and comprehensive coverage in the breadth and depth of subjects offered.

Students are assessed on their mastery of subject matter, application of knowledge, understanding of everyday scenarios and critical thinking.

Sunway College also offers a wide range of pre-university, diploma studies and professional accounting programmes, catering to the different learning styles and ambitions of different students.

These programmes include the Australian Matriculation, Canadian International Matriculation Programme, Monash University Foundation Year, Foundation in Arts, Foundation in Science and Technology, Diploma of Accountancy, Diploma in Finance, Diploma in Communication, Diploma in Business Administration, Diploma in Information Technology, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, Certified Accounting Technician, Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business, Certified Internal Auditors, Certified Practising Accountants and the Australia and Chartered Financial Analyst.
