Sketching her way to success

-

ManageMent and Science University (MSU) students are known for being well-rounded and employers’ top choice, with 98.6% employed within six months of graduation.

Its Bachelor of Fashion Design with Marketing student Siti nadhilah Mustafa is no exception.

In her second semester of the programme, the Diploma in Fashion Design graduate recently won the Best Sketch prize at a local gelato Raya 2018 competition.

How it all started

“I have been in love with fashion design since I was a little girl,” shared Siti.

“there was this fashion design show I discovered that gave off sophisticated vibes, which made me want to be a part of the art. So, I set my path to fashion design. I came to MSU and registered for the Diploma in Fashion Design programme. It exposed me to all the fundamentals of designing and also marketing and communication skills, which really added value to my diploma.

“after finishing the diploma programme, I felt I still had more to learn in fashion design, which is why I chose to progress to the Bachelor of Fashion Design with Marketing programme. I chose to stay on at MSU because with all the facilities MSU provides us at the School of Hospitality and Creative arts, I was confident I would have all the help I need to be a successful fashion designer.”

Learning experience at MSU

at MSU, Siti’s learning experience is not limited to in-class learning.

“Our lecturers have strong backgrounds in the industry and they often give us real-life input on what and how the fashion industry is like out there. MSU encourages us to be well-rounded and balanced graduates, so I try to balance my academic pursuits with extracurricular activities. I am an active member of the Performance arts and Cultural Club.

“apart from being active in extracurricular activities, I also joined the global Mobility Programme (gMP) at the Ueda College of Fashion in Osaka, learning the Japanese approach to fashion design. I was intrigued by their creative and unique anime-influenced fashion. the gMP experience has broadened my perspective in fashion,” she said.

Winning her first competition

For Siti, winning the gelato Raya 2018 was truly unexpected.

“I found out about the sketching competition from my friend who urged me to join and I figured it would be good if I tried. I told my mentor about it and she supported me.

“I am thankful to her because she helped me a lot throughout my process of creating the sketch that won the judges’ heart. I took two weeks working on the sketch with the help of my mentor and friends. I could never have done it if it weren’t for them.

“I joined the gelato Raya 2018 to see what I’m capable of and I’m proud of my achievement as it was my first participation in a design competition,” added Siti.

Future entrepreneur

For the remainder of her studies, Siti hopes to join more competitions.

She believes that it is a great way to introduce herself to the fashion industry and to get to know more people besides gaining experience. She plans to have her own brand in the future and be an entrepreneur.

the above achievement is the result of innovative strategies in the MSU curriculum. Furthermore, a range of co-curricular activities aimed at enriching graduates’ marketability are made available throughout each academic year.

MSU ensures that students are ready to face the real world.

technical knowledge and practical skills are instilled among students, making them invaluable additions to various talent pools across the industry.
