Future accountants go MAD
THE Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) held its 4th annual fun run event especially for accounting students on May 5, 2018.
The event tagline “Go M.A.D.!” encouraged participants to let loose and have fun as a team while undertaking the 5km course riddled with pit stops along the way, which were meant to challenge their grit and teamwork.
This year’s event was hosted by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and co-organised in partnership with the UPM Accounting Club (UPAC).
The organising committee worked closely with MICPA and did a great job putting the event together.
Participants had to complete five challenges at checkpoints along the way and the top five teams who finished the quickest with the highest scores took home prizes.
The campus, set amid lush greenery with a top-notch track stadium, provides an ideal venue.
MICPA’s newly appointed CEO Novie Tajuddin flagged off the race and cheered the students on as they made their way to the finish line.
“MICPA is pleased to have close to 400 future accountants from nine universities across the country joining us today. As a professional body, our aim is to ensure future young professionals have the right platforms early on to develop themselves into well-rounded individuals who are ready for employment.
“We are also glad to have strong support from the industry – the students get firsthand opportunities to find out more about their future careers from the event partners in our midst today,” said Novie.
The seven event partners supporting the dash were accounting firms BDO, Crowe Horwath, Deloitte, EY, HLB Ler Lum, KPMG and Sekhar & Tan.
Most of the event partners sent a team of runners to join in the fun and took the opportunity to meet and mingle with participants.
Neo Moon Wei, Accounting Club president from Multimedia University, Cyberjaya, and a participant whose team won first place, shared, “The MICPA Accountant’s Dash 2018 was extremely fun. My friends and I enjoyed the teamwork and the opportunity to meet new friends from across the country.
“Despite our busy university schedule, I’m glad we managed to plan this in. I’m very keen to pursue the MICPA-CAANZ Programme as it is jointly offered by MICPA and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), which will allow me to obtain two qualifications.”
Event director Muhammad Hasbollah Mohd Rahim from UPM, who is also UPAC vice-president, said, “I’m thankful to MICPA for the opportunity to lead the organising of this event.
“It was a lot of hard work and I share the success of the event with my fellow committee members and the many volunteers who put in so much hard work and sleepless nights to ensure we put on a good event for Malaysian accounting students. This experience has helped sharpen my leadership, problem-solving, time management and organising skills, and in turn, built up my self-confidence.”
MICPA’s Young CPA members joined in the run alongside participants and readily struck up inspiring conversations with students who were keen to find out more about the career pathway of an accountant and their experience in pursuing the MICPA-CAANZ Programme.
It was certainly a fun and exciting run, and participants are already looking forward to next year’s M.A.D. event.
