Top achiever reveals secret

-

“I STARTED A-Levels at Advance Tertiary College (ATC) but initially I intended to go overseas. However, given my comfort level and the possibility of attaining a University of London degree while studying here, I decided to continue. Besides, the college has always been famous for producing good students,” says Hon Yee Neng.

Currently among the top three in Malaysia for the University of London Bachelor of Laws programme, Hon shares what she has learnt and how you, too, can be a top achiever:

“Personally, the most difficult part lies in getting your answers to stand out. At times, understanding concepts can be hard, but trying to analyse it in a different light can be more challenging.

“You need to be really passionate about law before you even start. There’s quite a lot of reading, memorising and understanding to get in touch with the subject. It’s not just during university that one has to persevere as a law student.

“As I am hoping to be a human rights lawyer in the future, I am currently interning at Jerald Gomez & Associates. I look at their life now and realise that it does indeed take quite a lot to be a lawyer in your own right, which is why I stress on the importance of perseverance.

“During A-Levels I met this lecturer who has been giving me continuous moral support. He is just one of many lecturers who are not just dedicated, but know my classmates and I well. Due to the small size of the school, you tend to get very close to your lecturers. They can give you the help and direction you may need in your studies.

“It was my mum who originally pushed me towards pursuing my A-Levels course at ATC. Her support has gone a long way. What most people tend to overlook, however, is that your support system needs to be yourself as well.

“When it comes to studies, ATC gives you lecturers, lecture notes and everything. What you need on your own is mental strength to stay grounded. External students only have one exam per year, so you have to stay really focused throughout. Moreover, since it’s 100% exam-based, it can get a bit lonely because everyone is studying on their own.

“ATC, compared to most universities in Malaysia, has a small community of students and lecturers so you feel very much at home. Your lecturers get to know you really well. They are very focused in their subjects since ATC specialises only in law and business. ATC helped me excel and it can help you, too.”
