Laying the foundation

“I am passionate about and constantly seeking opportunities in the oil and gas industry,” declared third-year BEng (Hons) Petroleum Engineering student Raudzah Hannani Fadzli of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM).

“The knowledge and experience I gained will definitely bolster my dream career as a petroleum engineer.”

Raudzah was one of the first batch of students taking part in HWUM’s foundation programme, along with Danial Lum Shi Haur, who went on to pursue the university’s Bachelor (Hons) Business Administration.

“I still remember my first impression of the university four years ago. It was a breath of fresh air compared to the other educational institutions that I had visited,” said Lum.

When asked what he liked most about the university, Lum answered, “One thing I will emphasise is that the opportunities and chances available in this university are one of a kind.

“HWUM is one of the best platforms out there for students to explore and ultimately, discover their potential.

“From what I can see, the university definitely opens up a great deal of possibilities for fresh graduates to step into the working world.”

Through Heriot-Watt’s foundation programme, both Raudzah and Lum have gone on to successfully complete their undergraduate studies and will be graduating this year.

Heriot-Watt lives up to its legacy of educational excellence by working closely with industry professionals to develop and accredit its curricula.

According to HWUM’s head of Malaysia Foundation Programmes, Associate Professor Dr Jasmine Low, “Enrolling in a HWUM Foundation programme enables students to experience a UK-benchmarked curriculum and UK style of learning and teaching from the start of their studies.

“Students are given early exposure to independent learning and problem-based learning and teaching methods with strong emphasis on English literacy as well as problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

“These skills help prepare them to cope with the rigours of undergraduate studies, while providing a good start in their overall development to be successful and employable graduates,” she said.

With a solid foundation set, students such as Raudzah and Lum will go on to climb greater heights in their undergraduate studies and further into their careers.

As a testament of the institution’s solid reputation as a provider of premier education, Heriot-Watt continues to make its name known internationally.

It is ranked 41st among universities in the world for its international outlook by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018 and was also recently dubbed the International University of the Year by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018.
