Simple scoring tools
YOU have books, an assignment and a deadline, now what else do you need to get an A? The answer may surprise you.
A nice roomy empty desk
The thing that’s important is that the table should be at a comfortable height and that you have plenty of space for your books, pens, laptop, cup of coffee – and possibly the supervising cat. If you don’t have space to work, you’ll be breaking off to pick things up and that ruins your concentration.
Good lighting
You need to be able to see clearly so you don’t end up squinting and getting a thumping headache. Lots of sunshine is good, because natural light is energising and cheerful. However, if you’re in a place where it moves about and casts shadows, it’s distracting. A good compromise is sunshine and to switch the lights on.
A good chair and support for your feet, arms, wrists and fingers
If you’re all hunched up, you’ll restrict your breathing and end up with muscle aches and strains. Worse, a few years of repetitive strain can mess up your hands for life.
So make sure you’re comfortable by adjusting everything to suit your height and shape. While you’re at it, get your eyes checked. If you need computer glasses, invest.
Silence, or at least, time out from distraction
Music can energise but if you’re singing along, your attention isn’t on your work. Use sound to filter out other people and distractions from outside. Switch off your phone and set e-mail, Facebook, WhatsApp and other social media to silent and no notifications.
