DO you like to play an instrument? Have you tried playing the ukelele, piano or drums?

Do you know music can positively alter our mood?

Besides uplifting our spirits, music can also be soothing and comforting.

Playing different instrument­s builds good listening skills too.

Musical instrument­s are grouped into families based on how sounds are produced from each instrument.

They are brass, percussion, woodwinds and strings.

Brass instrument­s are produced from brass and make sounds when air is blown inside. They include the trumpet, trombone and tuba.

Percussion instrument­s include drums and cymbals.

String instrument­s produce sound from their strings. The strings can be plucked, bowed or struck. String instrument­s include the guitar, harp, cello and dulcimer.

Woodwind instrument­s produce sound when air is blown inside. The flute, piccolo and clarinet are among woodwind instrument­s.

Anna Ruth Oh Hui Hann, seven, would like to learn how to play the ukelele. “I like the ukelele because it makes beautiful music. The first ukelele was made in 1879. There are four types of ukelele; soprano, concert, tenor and baritone.”

“My favourite musical instrument is the piano. This is my second year playing the piano.

“I love it because to me, it is one instrument that creates melodious music without the help of other instrument­s.

“My favourite musicians are Bach, Beethovena­ndBrahms.Iwouldlike­toplay on a baby grand one day,” says

Tiffany Ang Yun Xuan, nine, enjoys different types of musical instrument­s. “I know howtosingw­iththeukul­ele and play the piano. I would like to learn to play the harp in the future.”

Yong Zi Sheng ,nine,loves his big brown drum set. “WhenIgrowu­p,Iwanttobe a drummer. I want to play in a musical concert. I play the drum with my friends in school music class.”

Bernard Jude Andrew David, seven, loves to play the drums too. “Drums are big and amazing. It makes beautiful sounds.”
