Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) has unveiled the onyx, the country’s first cinema led screen. The 10.3m screen is by Samsung and it promises vivid colours in 4K resolution (4,096 x 2,160 pixels) that surpasses conventional projectors.

GSC chief executive officer Koh Mei lee says the partnership with Samsung Malaysia electronics is a reaffirmation of its promise to deliver cutting edge cinema for fans and a milestone for the cinema industry.

“With the onyx, you can see the colours for what they are, from the most pristine whites to the deepest blacks. It takes the experience of watching cinema and ramps it up to whole new levels,” she said.

The high contrast is thanks to the screen’s peak brightness of 146fl (foot-lambert) which is nearly 10 times higher than those of conventional theatre projectors, allowing the display to illuminate details that would go unnoticed on typical screens.

Samsung Malaysia electronics president, Yoonsoo Kim points out that fans go to the cinema not just for the content but to get an immersive experience.

“I worry that after you watch Samsung cinema, you won’t be able to watch other movies. once your eyes level up, it’s hard to settle for less,” he joked during the launch.

located at Hall 11 of GSC’s flagship Mid Valley Megamall cinema, the onyx supports HdR (high dynamic range) for a more vibrant and immersive viewing experience.

Unlike a traditional projector, it is free of image distortion and can fully utilise a movie hall’s seating space as it does not face line of sight issues.

Because it’s not a projector, ambient lights can be turned on in the hall which makes it ideal for child-friendly screenings or hosting e-Sport tournaments.

Complementing the visuals is a sound system by JBl by Harman Professional Solutions that borders the screen and promises an expanded audio “sweet spot” throughout the theatre’s seating area.

during the screening of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom at the unveiling, the onyx displayed superb details especially during the dark and rainy scenes, as well as appropriately loud dinosaur roars and explosions.

The cinema hall has also received a face lift and has a brand new interior and plush eco-leather seats. GSC says tickets to the onyx hall will incur an RM1.50 surcharge on top of the regular ticket price.

Tickets to catch Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, starring Chris Pratt, Bryce dallas Howard and lots of dinosaurs, are now available for purchase.
