UK education at local prices

-

UK university programmes are popular in Malaysia where an estimated 18,000 Malaysians are currently furthering their studies in various fields. Imagine obtaining a degree from a prestigious UK university locally at six times cheaper.

Welcome to the University of Greenwich (UoG), a well-known university that offers courses like accounting and finance, early years education and computing, through SEGi Group of Colleges.

SEGi Subang Jaya Faculty of Business and Accountancy head, Koh Yoke Ling said one of the reasons students choose to do their UK degree locally is because of the cost factor,

“An undergraduate or postgraduate done locally is a cheaper alternative than studying in the UK where a degree can cost up to RM450,000 while a locally-earned course will come to about RM70,000.”

She said while the course can be studied locally, some students opt to do their convocation in London, where the university is based.

“We also allow the students to transfer credit to the UK university for their remaining semesters and graduate there. We have some students who have opted for the 2+1 study mode where students do their first two years in Malaysia and their final year in the UK,” she added.

Koh said the accounting and finance course offered at SEGi College Subang Jaya and SEGi College Kuala Lumpur is one of the most sought-after, especially among working professionals.

SEGi students who take up BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance are also given exemptions in nine papers for Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). They then have to sit for five more papers for the ACCA qualification.

Another major selling point for the UoG programmes is the fact that there are dedicated staff members from the university stationed in Malaysia for the last two years.

“The staff also conduct academic talks and induction, which enable students to have better access to the right channel for any queries,” Koh said.

“Every year, staff and lecturers from the UoG would conduct a teaching visit to our campus to talk to the students and tutors. They will also discuss and advice on our teaching materials and assessments.

“Therefore, students enrolled in the UoG programmes with SEGi in Malaysia virtually have the same experience and syllabus as those who study in the UoG UK campus.”

Koh said the UoG’s ranking on webometrics is higher than most of its competitors’ partner universities offering similar programmes in Malaysia, another point that has worked to their advantage.

“Our student-teacher ratio is very low, and is another factor that draws our students.

“In recent months, we have also seen students from our competitors coming here to study, as they are not able to cope there with large number of students per class. Here, we offer guidance and truly care for our students,” she added.

According to Koh, with the long partnership with UoG, the two institutions have worked closely on academic collaborations and hold regular meetings on enhancing their programmes and deliveries.
