Re-inventing the cinema

5 reasons to catch the latest blockbusters on the Onyx screen at GSC.

-

The cinema has been reliant on projectors for over a hundred years but that’s about to change. Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) became the first cinema chain in the country to introduce the Onyx, a giant cinema LeD screen by Samsung.

Measuring 10.3m, it promises vivid colours in 4K resolution (4,096 x 2,160 pixels) that is claimed to surpass conventional cinema projectors.

So here are five reasons why it’s best to catch blockbusters on the Onyx, located at hall 11 of GSC’s flagship Mid Valley Megamall cinema in Kuala Lumpur.

1. Perfect black

The Onyx’s direct-lit LeD has a peak brightness level nearly 10 times greater than that of standard cinema projectors (146fL versus 14fL), allowing the screen to illuminate details that would go unnoticed otherwise.

And it displays images in hDR (high dynamic range) to make pictures look more vibrant and lifelike, just like the way your eyes see them.

2. Ultra contrast

The Onyx’s ultra-contrast and low-tone greyscale settings enable the screen to showcase both the brightest and darkest colours, claims Samsung.

In other words, you will be able to see the colours for what they are, from the most pristine whites to the deepest blacks, including subtle gradation even in the shadows and highlights.

3. The sweet spot

Complementing the visuals is a sound system by JBL by harman Professional Solutions that borders the screen and uses proprietary audio processing technology for a “Sculpted Surround” system.

This promises an expanded audio “sweet spot” so everyone in the theatre can experience sound (and sight) the way the content creators intended.

4. Go 3D

The Onyx makes 3D movie content more realistic through enhanced brightness and consistent colour amplification.

This allows you to see images and even minor visual details and subtitle text with better clarity so you don’t suffer from dizziness, a common occurrence in traditional 3D movie theatres.

5. See the light

Because it’s not a projector, ambient lights can be turned on in the hall which makes it ideal for child-friendly screenings or even hosting e-Sport tournaments, which is on the rise in Malaysia.

And did we mention that hall 11 has been completely renovated and has a brand new interior with plush new eco-leather seats?

Now that you know, catch a movie on Onyx if you want to experience next-gen cinema.
