Love identity crisis

Love Rerun finds ways to keep you hooked on a romantic mystery about a girl with a memory disorder.

- ANGELIN YEOH

IS it easier to go through a breakup when you don’t remember falling in love in the first place?

Meet Sayaka Minami – played by Anne Nakamura – a shy, geeky 30-year-old designer who has never been in a relationship.

One night, she’s about to confess her feelings to long-time friend and crush Ryosuke Sagisawa (Ryohei Otani).

However, she has cold feet and doesn’t go through with it. Sayaka goes to bed that night, telling herself that Ryosuke will know how she feels the next day.

The next thing you know, Sayaka wakes up at a stranger’s home. A man then appears and tells her that they have broken up and he wants Sayaka to pack her belongings and leave.

This is where viewers learn that three months have passed in Sayaka’s life. In that time, she’s dated and lived with the waifishlooking Shohei Machida (Yuki Furukawa).

But Sayaka has no memory of what happened in the past three months. All she remembers is her life as a girl who was too shy to profess her feelings to a crush.

So, how did she meet Shohei? What happened between Ryosuke and her? And most importantly, how come she doesn’t remember anyThree thing?

Love Rerun isa story of a woman looking to recall how her life has changed so much in just three months.

Viewers looking for a lighthearted fare will find Love Rerun’s romance-meets-mystery premise intriguing.

As Sayaka tries to unravel her history with Shohei, she’s also learning that she has also changed in many ways. The formerly geeky girl is now sporting a more fashionable look. months ago, Sayaka would’ve also never discussed romantic stories with her colleagues... well, because she had none.

But now, workrumour place has it that Sayaka has had a number of salacious experiher ences of own. In every few episodes, we meet a new character who dissome plays animosity towards poor Sayaka.

It seems Sayaka’s relationship with Shohei has made her the source of some terrible gossip.

So our protagonist tries her best to correct her reputation by making nice with some people. It’s easy to root for a character like Sayaka; she has an earnest demeanour and a freshfaced look that instantly makes her feel relatable.

In terms of romantic development, it’s hard to feel the chemistry between Sayaka and ex-beau Shohei. These two just don’t seem to match and for a love story to be believable, viewers need to see sparks fly.

Love Rerun requires viewers to be patient as it is slow in revealing what happened to Sayaka; viewers have to be content with limited flashback scenes.

As I kept tuning in for answers, I’m thankful that a quirky character like model Kyoko Ogasawara (Aya Omasa) comes into the picture to help Shohei and Sayaka relive important moments from their three-month relationship.

Of course, Kyoko has her own agenda. As Shohei’s ex-girlfriend, she wants to get back with him and has the chance to do so once Sayaka is out of the picture.

But as Sayaka remembers more about her time with Shohei, she starts to have feelings for him again. Isn’t that just complicated?

Well, perhaps that explains why love is the biggest mystery of them all.
