SHOWERING can be sometimes unbearable for individuals with very dry skin. Although the skin will be drier after showering, it can’t be helped as one cannot avoid taking baths.
The skin has a natural barrier to prevent excessive moisture loss consisting of a thin lipid film on the skin and structural lipids, rich in linoleic acid situated between the cells at the outermost layer of our skin. However, if the structural lipids are stripped away by frequent washing, showering and swimming or if they are not produced in sufficient quantities, as is the case in ageing skin, the outer cells become detached from each other and holes develop in the skin’s protective barrier. The result is a dry and flaky skin, which is more prone to inflammation and itching.
Regular care is vital to counteract this breakdown in barrier function and the lipid and moisture deficiencies in dry skin and to protect it from further damage.
