Striving for effective learning
DEDICATED to a culture of excellence, Taylor’s International School (TIS) continuously strives for improvements in the learning experiences offered.
As part of this continuum, TIS has formed a partnership with Quantum Learning Network from the United States to obtain Quantum Learning certification, which supports the school’s professional development needs.
Quantum Learning is a dynamic learning model that complements and enhances the UK-based international curriculum offered by TIS.
The Quantum Learning system is a proven model that enhances learning and promotes life skills, resulting in lifelong learning excellence.
To develop the school’s own certified team at its campuses, Mark Reardon, senior education consultant from Quantum Learning Education in the United States, joined TIS to coach and mentor TIS Quantum Learning facilitators and lead teachers to strengthen their professional practices.
“Quantum Learning helps teachers see the quality of their instruction and student learning. It is about joyful, meaningful and vibrant learning. In Quantum Learning, we teach the child as a whole. We teach that developing character is just as important as developing the brain,” says Reardon.
“There is a direct relationship between the teacher’s quality of teaching and the effectiveness of a student’s learning.
“The teacher is the orchestrator of learning. The better teachers know how to orchestrate learning, the better students know and remember the content. As a result, it improves the students’ outcome.”
Emphasising the need for teachers to continuously develop themselves, TIS Kuala Lumpur’s principal Peter Wells says, “When teachers aim for excellence, they want to make improvements because they want their students to learn to the best of their abilities.”
David Flint, principal of TIS Puchong, adds, “Based on established pedagogy, our partnership with Quantum Learning is helping us to further enhance our teaching and learning – working with teachers and students to deliver excellence in and out of the classroom.”
Feedback from teachers regarding the initiative has been positive.
For example, Pavithrah Thirumoothy from TIS Puchong finds that the new, engaging techniques facilitate learning more effectively.
Teacher Fatmawati Mohd Tajudin from TIS Kuala Lumpur agrees that engaging teaching in a supportive environment maximises a student’s acquisition of knowledge, skills and understanding.
According to TIS Puchong’s teacher Valerie Tan Vee Yen, Quantum Learning is helping her achieve mastery in the classroom.
“It is important to get learners ready by shifting their thinking, feeling and what they are doing before we teach. Although it is just a small element, it is important. When you get the students in the right state to learn, you can manage the class better and learning can be optimised,” says Tan.
