I am Lucky Luna

- By CECILIA DEVI WILFRED

I DIDN’T have a name initially. I used to live on the streets at Universiti Teknologi Petronas. I would move around the campus in search of food.

At times, some students were kind enough to give me food. But there were many days when I went hungry.

At times, I was beaten up and chased away by people.

I came into the limelight in late April, when my limb got caught in an animal trap. The metal rod went right through my leg. Such excruciating pain! But I put on a brave front and moved on, with the rod sticking out from my limb.

Some students saw me and tried to come closer. I became scared and ran off to hide. I became weaker as time went by.

After more than three days, a Noah’s Ark team and some of the students rescued me. They called me Luna. I was put in a car and sent to a vet in Ipoh.

He said my injured limb needed to be amputated. It was already infected and I was on antibiotics before the operation.

The next day, he operated on me. When I woke up, that limb was gone! I recuperated quickly but could not be sent back to the streets.

I am a three-legged dog now and considered “defenceless”. I was sent to a shelter that had more than 40 dogs. They had similar stories to mine. Through donations from kind souls, we were fed. We all stayed in the shelter, waiting to go home.

On June 22, I was taken to someone’s home. I was frightened in the beginning, but it turned out to be the best gift from God. My family cared for me like their own. On the second day, they bathed me. Finally, I had a future that I could look forward to.

I have a home, finally. I know I will be loved.

But I feel very sad for my fellow friends at the shelter. They too need a home since they can’t be sent out on the streets. They are waiting to be adopted. They want to be loved and cared for.

Most people want to keep dogs of particular breeds. At the shelter, most are street dogs or “mixed” breeds. Also, some of them are “special” dogs since they were rescued from some tragedy. Because of these reasons, many people shy away from adopting them. I know the chances for them to get adopted are very slim.

My eyes are tearing up as I think about their future. I am the lucky one.
