IT turns out that the spirit of patriotism was not just high among the employees of PLUS Malaysia Bhd (PLUS) during the PLUS Unity Drive; the three unity convoys that set out to bring cheer to children all over Malaysia was a big success too.

As part of the Sayangi Malaysiaku Drive initiated in conjunction with PLUS’ National Day and Malaysia Day campaign, the crew from radio stations 988 FM and Suria FM cruisers as well as Malay online portal mStar together with PLUS personnel went on three different routes to brighten up the day for charity organisations in the central, southern and northern regions of the peninsula.

On Aug 29, the event started off with the launch of the PLUS Unity Through Connectivity National Day 2018 campaign, with PLUS employees and guests singing Negaraku. The launch also featured rock band Bunkface which made a special appearance, singing the official theme song for the National Day celebrations, Kita Punya Malaysia.

As part of its efforts to promote unity among Malaysian, PLUS collaborated with Projek57, a social enterprise committed towards building unity and hope in Malaysia as well as creators of the Unity Ribbon in support of the orang asli education and empowerment programmes.

“Themed Unity Through Connectivity, this year’s campaign projects our aspiration in uniting and connecting people through our safe and comfortable highway network,” said PLUS managing director Datuk Azman Ismail at the launch of the drive, adding that National Day and Malaysia Day essentially reflect the spirit of unity among Malaysians.

The charity drive, in which PLUS and Projek 57 personnel together with radio personalities visited places of interest along the PLUS highway network, turned out to be a huge success when it came to connecting different groups of people, and all via our efficient highway system.

The mStar team, with special guest Sabah-born singer Andi Bernadee onboard, headed off to a “secret” location. The team stopped off at the Sungai Buloh Overhead Bridge Restaurants to talk to Malaysians there and spread a little cheer.

When they finally reached their destination – Dewan Komuniti Orang Asli Kampung Sungai Bil in Slim River, Perak – the boys and girls from PIBG SK Slim Village were overjoyed.

The orang asli children were excited to welcome the convoy and especially Andi, saying it was the first time a celebrity had visited them.

Andi entertained the 50 orang asli youth and children present and there were smiles and laughter all around. After singing together and having a short Q&A session, Andi and the team shared a meal with the children.

Team Suria, meanwhile, had Suria announcer Fizi Ali as the featured guest. This team made a pitstop at R&R Seremban and once again got members of the public to participate in fun Q&As.

Their destination was Pertubuhan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Seremban which houses 20 Chinese and Indian orphans and underprivileged children.

Fizi mingled with the kids, gave out gifts and was a big hit with them. He entertained the kids by drawing for them and asked them trivia questions like what the national flower is. The children enthusiastically answered, sang and waved the flag together. The convoy also gave out T-shirts to the children.

The crew from 988 FM had DJ Brandon at the helm, and after stopping at the R&R Serdang to spread the National Day spirit, headed to the Rumah Rukaiyah orphanage in Kajang, Selangor, where 25 Malay youths live.

Brandon gave out goodie bags and flags and all the children joined in a rendition of Saya Anak Malaysia.

All in all, it was a great day for all three teams. Apart from lifting the spirits of the children at the different venues and spreading the patriotic message of National Day, the three teams also handed over donations of RM3,000 from PLUS to each of the homes.
