Melinda Looi represents Malaysia in San Francisco
MALAYSIAN fashion designer Melinda Looi is showing at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s “Contemporary Muslim Fashions” exhibition (see Modern Grace). Her designs also feature in the campaign.
According to Looi, she is more than honoured to be selected for the exhibition. She believes that it is about time a major museum is exploring Muslim and modest dress codes.
“I applaude the De Young museum, which welcomes 1.7 million visitors annually, for bringing the topic of contemporary muslimah fashion to a wider audience and start a global discussion,” Looi told Star2.
One of her looks in the exhibition is the “The Paradise Within”, inspired by
Malaysia’s beautiful beaches. The embellishments embody the richness of corals and jewels of the sea.
“Sunset In
Africa”, on the other hand, draws from the magical sunsets of its namesake continent. The beauty of colours and fluidity of movement are captured by the weaved silk fabrics in shades of red and green. –
