HOMEGROWN conglomerate YTL Corporation has won the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce’s Global Responsible Business Leadership Awards 2018 in Community Empowerment Excellence. Sustainability is now a core function and part of its future strategic planning. Its motto is to be “A Steward for Our Good Earth”.

The company has implemented various green initiatives that won the hearts of the judges. Its F&B outlets at the Lot 10 and Starhill Gallery shopping malls recycle used cooking oil for a third-party company that makes biodiesel. To date a total of 32,047kg

of used cooking oil has been recycled.

Following the recent global ban on plastic straws and other single-use plastics, YTL Hotels has decided to stop providing plastic straws and plastic drinking water bottles at some of its resorts, including The Gainsborough Bath Spa Hotel, The Surin Phuket Resort, and Gaya Island Resort. Plans are in place to extend the initiative to other properties in the group in the near future.

It has also been involved in beach clean-ups. So far this year, the company has mobilised 159 volunteers from among hotel guests and employees who have collected a total of 1,556kg of trash.

In energy-intensive construction, YTL Cement uses significant portions of waste as fuel and aggregates in its production of cement.
