Food waste to organic fish food

-

THIS month, the Junior Chamber International (JCI) main sustainability award for 2018 was presented to Koperasi Alam Hijau (Kohijau), an NGO based in Ipoh, for its commitment to recycling and community engagement.

It recycles solid waste at 80 sites across Perak. The waste, which includes food packaging, is separated and sent to larger recycling centres for repurposing. The NGO pay the community members for the recycling in an innovative reward system.

The next exciting step for Kohijau is turning its attention to recycling food waste. From next month, it will be collecting organic waste, and using micro-organisms, the waste will be converted into fish food within 15 days. This food will then be given to its new organic fish farm.
