Path to a bright medical career

-

MAHSA UNIVERSITY’S medical faculty offers its students an ideal modern and traditional subject-based, system-synchronised curriculum that is both pragmatic and innovative in approach.

Its faculty members are handpicked from a local and international pool of experienced teachers.

While it is lecture-driven, innovative methods such as problembased learning, e-learning, early clinical exposure and small group sessions are integrated to boost students’ enthusiasm.

MAHSA’s five-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme is divided into two phases: Phase 1 comprises years one and two, while Phase 2 comprises years three to five.

Phase 1: Preclinical programme

Phase 1 is a preclinical programme largely conducted at the MAHSA University campus with some exposure to clinical medicine at Hospital Tanjung Karang.

Basic medical sciences are taught in organ-system blocks, with exposure to community medicine as well.

Non-block modules such as personal and professional development (PPD) and early clinical exposure also taught over these two years to emphasise the relationship between basic medical sciences and clinical practice.

There are two major examinations during Phase 1. The first is at the end of year one and the second is at the end of year two.

Phase 2: Clinical programme

Upon completion of Phase 1, students will proceed to Phase 2 of the programme, which is the clinical phase. It covers years three to five and is conducted at hospitals and health clinics designated as teaching centres for the faculty.

Students will undergo rotational postings of two to eight weeks in the disciplines outlined in the programme structure. They are also required to pass the Final Professional Examination at the end of year five to graduate.

The clinical programme is almost entirely hospital- and clinic-based at hospitals such as Hospital Sungai Buloh, Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Hospital Tanjung Karang.

Students are also exposed to clinical training at Klinik Kesihatan AU2, Rawang Perdana, Taman Ehsan and Taman Medan.

This ensures an eclectic mix of clinical training in major referral centres, community hospitals and primary care clinics. The completion of this five-year programme leads to an MBBS degree.
