Towards sustainable development
SUNWAY Education Group, together with the Jeffrey Sachs Centre for Sustainable Development and other corporate partners and sponsors, will celebrate the third anniversary of the launch of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) tomorrow.
To represent the actual distance in nautical miles from Sunway University to the United Nations Building in New York City where the goals were launched, a total of 8,165 guests were invited.
The event, which will be held at key Sunway City locations, will see all of those guests joining hands across the integrated township while pledging to support the ongoing success of the SDGs.
Joining in the event in Malaysia
This unique occasion provides an opportunity for individuals and organisations to showcase their pledge and ongoing support to the UN SDGs’ ambitions.
A personal or corporate pledge signifies Malaysia’s commitment towards creating a better world for this generation and the next through 17 important areas of development.
Who will be there
The event’s honourable guests will include ambassadors, ministers, celebrities and corporate leaders such as Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah. Sachs himself may also make an appearance.
There will be 17 VVIP speakers, who will be presenting the individuals goals to an expected crowd of 3,000 at Sunway University and 8,165 across Sunway City.
World famous magician and seven-time Merlin Award winner Moudini will be performing, as well as internationally renowned funny man Harith Iskander and a Malaysian military band.
Media presence
The event is expected to attract media attention from all across the region and even the world as Sunway University recognises the occasion in Kuala Lumpur, the home to the UN goals in Asia.
This represents a good opportunity for the nation in terms of global branding.
Benefits
In addition to taking part in this memorable occasion, those lucky enough to be among the 8,165 participants will receive a certificate of participation and an exclusive free invitation to the Post Event Celebration Show, to be held on the football pitch at Sunway University later the same morning.
Making a difference in the world
By leveraging on the significant public display of support, the magnitude of the event and the thousands taking part in it, the university hopes to ensure that the message that all should take responsibility for their actions and act now is transmitted throughout the world.
The level of awareness to be generated for the needs of the 17 SDGs is aimed at galvanising other nations and communities to make their own pledges.
In joining hands across Sunway City for this event, the organisers hope to reach out to the rest of world.
Becoming part of history in the making
With organisations across the world having pledged their support, this will be Malaysia’s opportunity to declare its commitment to the SDGs. By joining hands with colleagues, family and friends, we can show the world that we care too.
The event is scheduled to start at 8.30am with the arrival and registration of guests at Sunway University, followed by pre-event activities at 9am.
At 9.45am, the joining of hand and pledge making will take place, followed by a post-event celebration show at 10.15am.
By noon, the post-event show will conclude.
The SDGs provide a holistic framework that is applicable to all countries, with the vision of eradicating poverty and deprivation, growing economies, protecting the environment, advancing peace and promoting good governance.
The 17 goals were adopted by world leaders who gathered at a special United Nations summit in New York on Sept 25, 2015.
