Opening doors to better lives
FOLLOWING Sunway University founder and chancellor Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah’s firm belief that higher education is vital to national progress, every year the Sunway Education Group through the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF) awards scholarships to thousands of students from different ethnicities, cultures and backgrounds to pursue their studies at Sunway College and Sunway University.
Each year, the JCF aspires to reach out to more students to provide a chance for quality education with the hope that the contribution will make a positive impact on their lives.
“Sunway University is a great place. The lecturers are always willing to help us. There are also many events on campus as Sunway University constantly collaborates with various institutions and partners for conferences and forums. I’m grateful to have been given the opportunity to study here,” said JCF Community scholar Mark Sio Joo Xing.
After graduating with a Diploma in Information Technology last year, he is now continuing his degree in the BSc (Hons) Information Technology (Computer Networking and Security) at Sunway University.
Each year, 20 JCF Community Scholarships are allocated for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The scholarship has always been synonymous with the JCF. Considered a highly valued social transformer, it is awarded to such students to encourage them to reach their full potential.
Other scholarships available at Sunway College and Sunway University include the Jeffrey Cheah Entrance Scholarship, Jeffrey Cheah Continuing Scholarship, The Chancellors Scholarship of Sunway University and Lancaster University, Sunway Excellence Scholarship, Sunway University Young Chef Scholarship, Jeffrey Cheah Foundation Scholarship, Sunway Sports Scholarship, School of Arts Music Scholarship, Jeffrey Cheah Foundation – Sunway Group Scholarship, Scholarship for UEC Students, Sunway ECA Achievers and Sports Awards and Sunway University Postgraduate by Research Scholarship.
Scholarships are also offered through the SEG-Elena Cooke Education Fund and local media: Nanyang Tertiary Education Fund, Sin Chew Daily Education Fund and The Star Education Fund.
Raenuga Indran received the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation Scholarship to pursue both a Foundation in Science and Technology at Sunway College and a BSc (Hons) Psychology at Sunway University.
“This award has provided me with a platform to ignite my potential, increase my depth of knowledge and spark change by giving back to the community, which is one of the values of the institution.
“I have been granted the privilege to study in the #MostHappeningCampus – a one-stop hub for extracurricular opportunities,” she said.
Through participation in various extracurricular opportunities, Raenuga earned herself the Extra Curricular Achievers Award.
“This scholarship has not only relieved my mother’s financial pressure, but presented me with a golden ticket for quality education,” she said.
Last year, the JCF disbursement of RM72mil worth of scholarships to more than 3,000 deserving students brought the total amount of scholarships awarded to RM402mil. The amount continues to grow as Tan Sri Dr Cheah aims to disburse more than RM1bil worth of scholarships in his lifetime.
During their time at Sunway College and Sunway University, students will be exposed to hands-on learning and pick up essential skills such as time management, interpersonal and critical thinking skills for career development and personal development.
Students will also learn to be independent, mix with people from different backgrounds and expand their boundaries. Through scholarships, the Sunway Education Group and the JCF provides students with the goal of a quality higher education.
