Unique approach to medical studies
OVER the last decade, Malaysia has witnessed tremendous progress in the field of medical teaching. Today, we have numerous public and private medical colleges in Malaysia plying their trade in education for both Malaysian and foreign students.
One of the more unique collaborations in the teaching of medicine is the USM-KLE International Medical Programme, which is formulated by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and implemented at KLE University in Belgaum, India.
India is known worldwide for its medical programmes. Many other countries lure Indian medical faculty members to their shores to help teach their students.
Recognising these positives offered by Indian medical colleges, one of Malaysia’s top universities, USM (Universiti Sains Malaysia) collaborated with one of India’s leading medical universities to establish the USM-KLE International Medical Programme.
The five-year MD programme by USM-KLE is one of a kind in Malaysia and India. Established in 2010, it utilises USM’s programme at its “offshore” campus in India.
The programme utilises an Indian faculty, Indian hospitals and Indian patients but is regulated, assessed and monitored by a Malaysian government university.
USM-KLE students are exposed to a constant stream of patients in two of its teaching hospitals – the 500-bed KLE Centenary Charitable Hospital and the 565-bed KLE Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital and Medical Research Centre. With a faculty strength of almost 200, the USM-KLE programme boasts one faculty member to six or eight students.
Students at the USM-KLE campus have access to hostels with laundry facilities, a gymnasium and pantries. A mess catering Malaysian food is also part of the hostel.
Students keen to apply for the USM-KLE International Medical Programme must have SPM or equivalent pre-university qualifications, as well as a strong foundation in the English language. Prospective students will be interviewed by the USM Faculty of Medicine in Kubang Kerian.
Nugrahan Sdn Bhd has been appointed by USM and KLE University to identify qualified candidates for this unique programme. Interested candidates may contact 1800 222 939 or Thiban (012-224 5649) or Hareen (016377 2853) or join our Nugrahan Roadshow event from March 25-30 from 6pm to 9pm in the northern and southern states.
