Working together as a team
WHEN you’re coming together for a project, getting the right type of people is important for efficiency and success.
Here are some ideas to make sure your team will work well together.
pick people who can do the task
If you’re building a wall, there’s no point in hiring woodworkers.
So when you set up, see what tasks need to be done and figure out what skills your team needs.
pick people who like teamwork
If you’re building that wall, you really want bricklayers and plasterers who enjoy working with others. Otherwise, you have an artist with plaster who won’t talk to the brickie and so on.
avoid hiring feuding staff
If Steve is in a snit with Dave, working together closely will bring that fight out in the open. If you can, be sure in advance that the team members don’t have relationship baggage.
Celebrate diversity
Culture is “the way we do things here” so be sure that in your team’s culture, everyone is valued. The best way is to highlight people’s individual sterling qualities right from the start.
encourage cooperation
If there’s a sense that people who complete their task first “win” then you’re building internal strife. Encourage people to communicate, and foster a culture of cooperation.
Make sure you’re transmitting fervour
If the team leader is lackadaisical, you will suck the bounce out of your team.
So be chipper about the project and about the terrific team you love to work with.
Share the mission goal
Share the mission goal and make sure everybody agree on it. If the goals are vague, you’re going to be working at cross-purposes, so be sharp about the ultimate mission.
