Promoting cybersecurity excellence

-

AS hackers and hacking technologies become more sophisticated, there is a need for more digital security professionals. Cisco, Symantec, Cybersecurity Ventures, Isaca and Intel have all expressed concern over global talent shortage, as highlighted in the Cybersecurity Jobs Report 2018-2021 by Cybersecurity Ventures.

With the support of industry partners and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) continuously responds to such talent demand as it aspires to train and nurture “superheroes” of the digital space, who will combat digital crimes and safeguard digital assets after they graduate.

To support this goal, the teaching team comprises professionally certified academics who are able to impart real-world cybersecurity practices to students. Through continuous benchmarking against the world’s top universities, APU ensures that its curriculum meets international standards.

Its industry advisory panel consists of experts from the cybersecurity field such as CompTIA, Isaca, CSM, MDEC, TecForte, Cyber Test Systems, Cyber Intelligence and SecureKi. Through these collaborative partnerships, they are involved in designing the curriculum to ensure an up-to-date syllabus.

APU also houses state-of-the-art infrastructure to complement the delivery of the curriculum. In October 2018, with support from the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia and MDEC, APU launched the nation’s first CyberSecurity Talent Zone, which is now home to military-grade realtime cybersecurity monitoring systems, research centres and simulation infrastructure to nurture global cybersecurity, networking and Internet of things talents.

The full-fledged Cyber Threats Simulation and Response Centre (or Cyber Range) and Security Operations Centre stream live monitoring data extracted from a database of cyberattacks worldwide.

Based on real-time data, APU students learn to monitor, troubleshoot, investigate and escalate security breach issues.

APU’s amalgamation of qualified academic professionals, industryrelevant curriculum and worldclass facilities has produced digital security superstars who constantly outperform their peers in national and international competitions.

Notable achievements include the Top University Award at the KPMG Cyber Challenge 2018, Champion of the Ernst & Young Asia-Pacific Global Hackathon 2019, three-time champion at the F-Secure Intervarsity Cyber Security Challenge since 2016, as well as the Cyber Heroes Challenge 2019 Champion and Most Valuable Player award.

Graduates of APU’s digital security programmes are part of the global digital security workforce, employed globally in renowned multinational companies.

As Malaysia’s premier digital tech university, APU has leveraged on its edge in innovative education by delivering high-quality and industry-relevant programmes in the areas of digital security such as the BSc (Hons) Information Technology with specialisation in Information Systems Security, BSc (Hons) Cyber Security, BSc (Hons) Forensic Computing and the BSc (Hons) Computer Science with specialism in Digital Forensics.

APU is a pioneer in digital security education for the nation and ensures that talent fed into the industry are equipped with the knowledge and skills that allow them to seamlessly fit into a hyper-realistic emulation cyber environment.

APU is among Malaysia’s premier private universities with a unique fusion of technology, innovation and creativity that effectively prepares graduates for significant roles in business and society.

APU was named one of the Highest Rated Emerging Universities in Malaysia, being rated at Tier 5 (Excellent) under the Setara 2011 Ratings by the Ministry of Higher Education and Malaysian Qualifications Agency, and maintained this rating in the 2013 and 2017 Setara 2017 Ratings.

Under the Quacquarelli Symonds 2017 Ratings, APU was awarded Five Stars in four categories: Teaching, Employability, Facilities and Inclusiveness.

In 2017, APU was named one of Malaysia’s Premier Digital Institutions of Higher Learning by MDEC for its commitment to offering topnotch digital technology courses.
