Hands-on learning
ON March 28, a group of 28 students and three lecturers from the International Medical University’s (IMU) Foundation in Science (FiS) programme participated in a field trip to the IMU Clinical Campus Seremban located next to Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar.
This trip would not have been made possible without the cooperation of the Student Representative Council (SRC), Prof Nazimah Idris, Assoc Dean of Clinical Affairs and Development from the School of Medicine, and FiS lecturers.
The purpose of the field trip was to expose FiS students to the medical profession and healthcare environment.
The day began with a warm welcome from SRC members. Senior SRC members then shared their experiences and knowledge acquired from the healthcare programmes they are currently pursuing in IMU.
They also briefed their juniors on the medical procedures, tools and equipment that they would use in hands-on sessions later in the day.
After lunch, Prof Nazimah delivered a welcome speech and shared her experiences in the medical field. This was followed by a tour to the orthopaedic, paediatric and emergency wards.
Soon after, participants were divided into groups of four to five members, and each group role played different medical scenarios. The role play included procedures in making veins more visible and performing a venipuncture to take blood from a patient’s forearm, and regulating oxygen equipment and administrating oxygen to patients.
Overall, the sharing of knowledge, hands-on experiences and laughter strengthened the bond between the SRC members and the students from the FiS 218 intake who joined the field trip.
The field trip also further spurred the participants’ interest in practising in healthcare.
FiS is the preferred foundation for entry into IMU’s undergraduate degree programmes (local degrees and credit transfer options). It provides the academic preparation required for admission into a science-related degree.
Students will be equipped with strong fundamental knowledge and skills to pursue studies in the areas of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and health sciences.
FiS aims to prepare students for their undergraduate studies, so the teaching methodology is aligned to those used in the undergraduate programmes.
This gives students a head start to the undergraduate learning environment. The FiS has three intakes a year in April, July and September.
