Sail through school
Prepare for adventure at City harbour International school
WOULD you consider sending your children to a boarding school right here in Malaysia, that’s by the ocean, and equipped to give them not just an international-standard education but exciting extra-curricular activities such as swimming, tennis and golf as well?
The City Harbour International School (CHIS) located in Seri Manjung, Perak, offers the Cambridge curriculum with four international benchmarks including Primary Checkpoint, Secondary Checkpoint, International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) O and A levels.
The school also offers early years (Nursery and Reception for children aged 2 to 5).
From 2020, CHIS will also offer the KSSR and KSSM National curriculum for those between seven and 17, preparing students for UPSR, PT3 and SPM exams.
The school in its third year currently has over a hundred students.
The founder and managing director, 43-year-old N.S. Lal Muhunthan, says that more of our local parents should consider boarding as an option as it is here that students learn independence and build character.
“Not many Malaysians send their children to boarding school even though facilities such as the Royal Military College and the Mara Junior Science College have been around for a long while,” he said.
“In other countries, boarding school is a lot more an accepted part of society.”
Lal hopes it will grow in popularity now that CHIS is offering an affordable option for locals as well as expatriate families to consider. Boarding fees are RM8,800 per term on a twin sharing basis.
CHIS’ hall of residence is located about 10 minutes away from school at Harbour View apartments which are fully furnished with tight security.
The boarding comes with full accommodation, transport to and from school, six meals daily, after school study time and children above 10 years area eligible to stay here.
“We give children the space to discover their potential, they learn how to manage themselves, and it’s a healthy way to learn to be independent,” Lal shared about the benefits of boarding school.
“It’s also encouraging to see when parents meet their children for the weekends, healthy bonds are built, rather than the tense and distant relationships of modern families burdened by rushed lifestyles,” Lal shared.
CHIS’ philosophy is four-fold and encompasses intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual spheres.
Teaching staff is made up of locals, as well as Asian expatriates.
Class sizes are kept small to enable teachers to perform differentiated instruction tailored for students’ needs and allows for more experiential learning experiences.
To complement its international education opportunity, CHIS offers a string of facilities including a digital resource centre, indoor and outdoor play areas, Science, STEM, and Apple Computer labs, art and music rooms, an auditorium, a multi-purpose hall, football field, athletic track, basketball, tennis, volleyball, squash courts and a swimming pool.
“Today many parents don’t have the time to look into how to make their children’s lives more fruitful and productive as they are desperately trying to juggle their work lives with many other struggles.
“At CHIS, we offer a place where children are able to grow positively with lots of exciting activities.
“Our proximity to the Royal Malaysian Navy base here in Lumut, enables us to offer a lot of sea sports as well as engage experienced coaches to teach,” said Lal.
CHIS is the only international school in Malaysia to collaborate with the famous self development organisation, The Outward Bound School, where our students go for biweekly activities which have been included into the curriculum.
With students aiming for the Junior Award Scheme for Schools (JASS) and the Duke of Edinburgh Award (DoFE), CHIS is the dream school to be in where a balance of academic and sports provides all that is necessary for the global citizens of tomorrow.
