Poring Hot Spring, Sabah
VISITORS to Sabah are often in search of beautiful beaches and islands such as Sipadan, Mabul and Mataking, where you can go swimming, diving or snorkelling. There are also those who seek out adventurous activities like climbing Mount Kinabalu.
And then there is the Poring Hot Spring.
Located in the Ranau district, Poring is about a two-hour drive away from the city of Kota Kinabalu. The name Poring comes from the Kadazandusun word for a bamboo species found in the vicinity.
The hot spring is situated in the lowlands and is surrounded by rainforests.
Why you should go
Soaking in the mineral-infused hot spring waters is good for health and improves blood circulation. It is relaxing, a good way to de-stress, and it also soothes away any aches or pains that you may have.
This is a good way to spend the day with your family or friends. There are also many other activities that you can do and interesting places that you can visit close by.
What to do
Enjoy soaking and relaxing in the hot springs with your family and friends. These Japanese-style baths comprise open-air tiled baths with taps which you can fill with fresh water from the hot springs. If you’re a tad shy, there are also enclosed baths within gazebochalet like shelters that offer more privacy.
You can also visit the butterfly farm, orchid conservation centre, tropical garden, canopy walkway (said to be the highest in the state), or go jungle trekking.
You might also encounter some interesting flora and fauna here such as the world’s largest flower – the rafflesia – as well as various birds, insects, and wild monkeys.
Who will like it
Poring Hot Spring is where tired hikers head to after climbing Mount Kinabalu because the water helps soothe any aches and pains from the strenuous climb.
But, even if you don’t intend to climb Mount Kinabalu, you are still likely to enjoy soaking in the hot springs to relax.
The place is very popular with locals and tourists.
Getting there
There are public buses from Kinabalu Park, but they only make one trip per day.
You can also take a taxi or Grab from Ranau town. If you’re driving, the Google coordinates are: 6.045776,116.703327. There are ample parking inside the main entrance.
If you’re coming from Kota Kinabalu, and are unfamiliar with the roads, it is best to hire a local guide or join a tour.
