MANY local Malaysians are sceptical about education in Russia. Little do they know, Russian graduates are widely recognised and able to pursue a career in other countries. The education syllabus in Russia is as good as any university in Europe.

Many local top scorers and achievers have enrolled into medical universities in Russia. There are a number of reasons why students and parents choose Russia. One of the main reasons is the cheap tuition fees, which are heavily subsidised by the Russian Federation government.

A Russian medical graduate shares, “I would certainly point out there has been no issue regarding the learning process. Many parents have a misconception that they have to go for top ranking universities for a good, proper tertiary education.

“I strongly disagree with this idea because it is the individual effort that is more important.

“A student who has no passion for the studies and daydreams in class will never be a good doctor even if he manages to scrap through the examinations, while a student who is willing to participate in lectures and tutorials with enthusiasm will graduate to be a better doctor.

“As a senior medical doctor, I do not condone senior doctors who pre-judge a medical graduate on where he graduated from.

“For those who do not know much about Russia, it is a very safe country to live in. The incidence of robbery and snatch-theft is much lower than some major cities in Europe.

“The public transportation is one of the most efficient in the world and it is relatively cheap for students. It is not difficult for Muslim students to look for food, as there are plenty of options for halal cuisine and ingredients in the local supermarkets.

“Malaysian students will usually form a very strong friendship as we rely on one another due to the fact that we are far from home. This will lead to children being more independent and is the best chance to grow and be independent.

“Students will find joy in studying abroad as it is a once in a lifetime chance. Many graduates will remember their journey fondly as it is always regarded as the best time of their life.

“Russian graduates are versatile and able to cope well in any country they work in. I’m sharing my experience with all SPM and STPM school-leavers as a medical doctor working in Glasgow. I am a Russian graduate and I have no regrets pursuing my tertiary education in Moscow.

“If given the chance to turn back the time, I would choose the exact same path. My colleagues in the hospital have good regard for me and I have shown excellent progress as a medical doctor here despite graduating from a far-off place called Moscow.”
