ONE in three Malaysians suffers from mental health issues according to the National Health and Morbidity Survey done in 2015. The same survey revealed that mental illness is predicted to be the second-highest health problem in Malaysia by 2020, judging from the increasing trends of sufferers.
Mental health is a global disorder, so much so that it was included as part of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals with a targeted focus on promoting mental health and well-being by 2030.
Fraught with stigmas and challenges, mental health is one area of study with immense need and possibilities. It is also a critical career option as Malaysia is in need of more psychologists and counsellors to address the shortage of mental health services in public, private and social health settings.
Psychology is a branch of health science that focuses on mental health counselling, intervention and well-being, addressing issues related to organisational effectiveness, education, public health, relationship, personal and professional developments, behavioural science and social empowerment.
Armed with a clear goal of producing exceptional mental health professionals, the SEGi Group of Colleges (SGC) has been working hard to ensure that their psychology programmes comprehensively cover all the basics and beyond to groom future psychologists, therapists, counsellors, social workers, educators, trainers, and consultants.
Apart from their home-grown Diploma in Psychology, SGC also offers Bachelor of Science in Psychology in collaboration with their American partner institution, Troy University, as part of the American Degree Program (ADP) offering, and their UK partner, University of Greenwich (UoG).
SGC’s Diploma in Psychology covers the fundamentals of psychology in various disciplines preparing graduates for a career in consultancy, rehabilitative care, social service, education, and human resource among others, whereas the degree programmes provide in-depth theoretical and applied knowledge in psychological science and more.
Troy’s psychology programme is known to be one of the best courses offered by the American university.
In fact, it has been cited as one of the most affordable and best value degree in recent 2019 rankings by Great Value Colleges and CollegeAffordability Guide.org.
Meanwhile, the UoG psychology programme has been garnering high satisfaction from its students based on the recent National Student Survey, particularly for its learning opportunities and academic support.
“Value-packed with local and global curriculums, our psychology students will be equipped with excellent research skills, analytical and critical thinking as well as practical problem-solving skills that are crucial for a successful career in this field,” said Carolyn Choo, SEGi College Subang Jaya Academic-Faculties head.
Choo said psychology is a heart to heart field and requires a highly evolved human touch. Those taking up the course will be groomed in all aspects including psychological and emotional aspects so that they are able to apply the right approaches when dealing with different people and challenges.
“If you are a clinical psychologist or a psychotherapist, you need to apply the relevant technical skills to provide the right diagnosis for your patients. If you are a counsellor, you learn how to empower your clients to solve their own problems.
“If you are a social worker, you have the opportunity to influence communities and authorities and if you choose businessoriented specialisations, you will have a major role in influencing your organisation’s development, especially in terms of recruitment, labour relations and training and development,” she added.
SGC offers Diploma in Psychology, Bachelor of Science in Psychology (minoring in Communication Studies or Global General Business) and Bachelor of Science in Communication Arts (minoring in Psychology) by Troy University; and Bachelor of Science in Psychology by UoG.
