KOLEJ Yayasan UEM (KYUEM), a full-boarding college located just 70km north of Kuala Lumpur, has a reason to celebrate with the release of its students’ Cambridge A-Level results.

The educational institution reported in August that its July 2017 and January 2018 cohorts scored highly in the exams – 93% scored in the range of grade A* to grade B while 78% of all grades were either A* or A, assuring the students of firm offers from distinguished universities.

Additionally, 65% of students achieved at least three A grades, 28% achieved at least four A grades and 28% achieved at least three A* grades.

These results top those of last year and to add to KYUEM’s success, eight of its students have enrolled in the University of Cambridge and two others in the University of Oxford this year.

Ninty-six per cent of its students secured a place at their first-choice university, mainly in the UK followed by Ireland, the US and Australia.

Furthermore, every year, several KYUEM students are awarded either “Best in the World” or “Best in Malaysia” for their performance in individual A-Level subjects.

How is this achieved?

KYUEM is recognised as a selective college that requires a strong academic performance from its students. While they are actively encouraged to develop independence in their learning, the institution provides an exceptional range of support throughout the students’ time there.

KYUEM is an entirely residential college and all students are assigned to a pastoral tutor group incorporated into a “house” system, entrusted to a house parent and overseen by the Student Services Department.

Attached to this department are a fully qualified counsellor and a health clinic with three qualified nurses. Its students live and work in an environment that is academically demanding, so their emotional well-being is of immense importance.

Sound advice is provided to the students throughout their A-Level course by KYUEM’s Academic and University Relations Department liaisons. This helps to maximise students’ potential and assists in securing them the finest of higher education placements.

Being acutely aware of changes in the global educational environment and the need to prepare its students to face the challenges ahead, KYUEM receives frequent visits from admissions officers and senior academics of top universities with information about the latest degree course opportunities, subject combinations and likely grade requirements.

Top-quality infrastructure and procedure

The college boasts exceptional facilities while the environment is tranquil and conducive for learning.

Its relative isolation demands a high level of security, with roundthe-clock patrols by security guards and an extensive CCTV camera network.

Every student has a private bedroom in a variety of accommodation types while classes are set in new and refurbished classrooms. Apart from that, KYUEM has 10 science laboratories, a “cyber lounge” and an IT laboratory.

A recently renovated Resource Centre with a multitude of texts and an AV room are also part of the facilities, while sporting facilities include a dedicated sports hall with squash and badminton courts, a weight training room, a football/ rugby pitch and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

KYUEM’s teachers are highly qualified International A-Level specialists approved by the Ministry of Education. The college offers only Cambridge International AS and full A-Levels, delivered by dedicated local and expatriate teachers whose work is supplemented by numerous administrative and support staff.

Tomorrow’s Malaysia requires more than academic success. It requires young people with vision, leadership and maturity beyond their years with a holistic outlook on life that is developed through social, cultural and academic balance.
