Teach your child new skills
HAVE you heard the adage: “Practice makes perfect”? In early childhood, repetition forms the basis for learning, skill development and accomplishment. Think about when a child first learns to walk. They begin by crawling, then repeating the action of standing and toddling, before they master the ability to walk. A child must first learn fundamental skills before they can acquire speed, increased confidence, and mastery. It is through repetition that possibility becomes ability.
Your brain works to achieve that ability through muscle memory. Muscle memory is not a memory stored in your muscles, of course, but memories stored in your brain that are much like a cache of frequently enacted tasks for your muscles. It is a form of procedural memory that can help you become very good at something through repetition.
If you are practicing a math worksheet over and over again, the idea is that you will continue to improve because the more you do something, you build up that procedural memory and your brain can quickly instruct your muscles to carry it out.
Our brain has the amazing ability to change, adapt, and get stronger. Learning and practicing help strengthen and change our brains. Your brain is changing and creating new neural pathways when you struggle to learn something new. In other words, there is a lot happening in your brain when you are learning. All learning can build new information pathways, but learning things that are challenging for you can supercharge your brain growth.
Practising Kumon daily worksheets include examples of how to solve the problems and teach a lesson that is slightly more advanced than the lesson before. Learning is incremental and your child learns with confidence after each new success and worksheet completed.
