All-rounded aspiring accountants
AN annual event for accounting students, the MICPA-CAANZ Accountancy Week 2019 was organised by The Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) and Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand (CA ANZ) to promote the accounting profession and develop a community of students who excel not just academically, but as all-rounders.
With a Star Wars theme – “The Accountants Strike Back” – this year marked the 20th Accountancy Week and was held from Nov 12 to 16, with over 650 students from 19 different institutions of higher learning.
This year, MICPA joined forces with the accounting club of International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM), BACC, who were the main hosts.
The week started off with an Exclusive Networking Cocktail on Nov 12 for students with the intention of providing them with an opportunity to meet event sponsors who are amongst the top employers in Malaysia – BDO, Crowe, Deloitte, EY, Grant Thornton, Ler Lum Advisory Services, PwC, and Sekhar & Tan.
It was also a great opportunity to learn more about the dual professional accounting qualification jointly offered by MICPA and CA ANZ. The nominee of the Most Outstanding CPA 2019 Award, Razlan Ashley Alif Richard, shared his personal experience pursuing the MICPACAANZ Programme with the students present. It was truly an engaging and inspiring session.
On Nov 13, 10 teams participated in the Business Strategy Challenge – Management Simulation Game and this interesting challenge of wits and business acumen was organised in collaboration with Universiti Kebangsaaan Malaysia’s (UKM) accounting club, AEFEP.
On Nov 15, the Accounting Students Quiz for diploma-level and degree-level was held at IIUM.
The Sports & Games Competition commenced on Nov 16 with an opening ceremony officiated by MICPA chief executive officer Novie Tajuddin at IIUM.
It was truly encouraging to see young future accountants excelling in the sporting arena as well. The whole event drew to a close with a Closing and Prize Giving Ceremony which was graced by Novie Tajuddin and event sponsors.
It was an enriching experience for the student organisers. Aliya Kusri shared, “One of the things I learned as project director is that in order to solve a problem, one has to overcome the fear of failure.
“The experience I gained was priceless and helped me develop as an individual. Thank you to my dedicated team for their tireless support and of course, MICPA-CA ANZ for trusting us to co-organise the event.
BACC president Mohd Nazirul Akmal Maliek Zaliezam added, “A big shout-out to my BACC team for their dedication in organising the event. I would like to thank MICPA for the opportunity to be part of this great event. We certainly learned a lot from the experience!”
