A growing demand for OSH experts
UNIVERSITI Kuala Lumpur Institute of Medical Science Technology (UniKL MESTECH) introduced the Bachelor of Occupational Safety and Health (Honours) in September 2019.
The four-year programme is offered to Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) holders, foundation or matriculation students and diploma graduates, who fulfil the entry requirements.
Students enrolled in this programme will be equipped with theory, hands-on practical and management skills in the occupational safety and health-related sectors.
It is a multi-disciplinary course aimed to produce knowledgeable, competent and professional occupational safety and health practitioners who are capable of independent practice in any industry sector.
The programme offers vast strengths in various areas including occupational safety and health legislation, occupational management system (ISO45001), industrial toxicology, risk assessment, human factor and ergonomics.
In addition, students will also need to conduct research projects and choose four elective subjects related to occupational rehabilitation and behavioural safety.
The uniqueness of this programme is the students will obtain professional competency certification upon completion of the study.
As Malaysia is increasingly strengthening the legislative requirements for occupational safety and health (OSH), the future demand for competent and qualified OSH professionals is expected to be high.
Institute of Labour Market Information and Analysis (ILMIA) and TalentCorp Malaysia in February 2019 listed the OSH professional in the Critical
Occupations List as it is significantly in demand and facing shortages in the Malaysian labour market.
This dedicated group of safety and health professionals is responsible for managing the OSH system, compliance to regulatory requirements, making available technical advice and providing OSH promotion and education at the workplace.
Graduates from this programme will be able to undertake safety and health professional roles in various sectors as Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Executive, Safety and Health Officer (SHO), OSH Coordinator, Industrial Hygienist, OSH Competent Person (OYK) and HSE Consultant. The programme’s career pathway offers job demand, attractive salaries and career advancement.
