Building a foundation for success

-

IF you’ve just got your IGCSE, SPM or equivalent results, the next logical step is to enrol into a foundation programme, which would subsequently allow you to progress to an undergraduate degree.

The International Foundation Programme (IFP) offered at the University of Reading Malaysia, an international branch campus of the University of Reading in the UK, gives students the option to progress to an undergraduate degree at either the university’s UK or Malaysia campus.

More importantly, progression is guaranteed for those who successfully complete the IFP with the required academic results, meaning that they don’t need to re-apply for admission into their desired undergraduate degree and risk being rejected.

The university’s UK campus is located in the beautiful town of Reading, which is only 25 minutes from London by train.

The spectacular, 130ha award-winning campus is recognised for its greenery and scenic beauty.

Reading town centre is a mere 15 minutes away from the university by bus, and has plenty of shopping, dining and recreational activities to keep students occupied when they are not studying.

Students who choose to study at the university’s Malaysia campus in Educity, Iskandar Johor, which opened its doors in 2015, get exactly the same degree as that offered in the UK campus but at a significantly more affordable cost compared with studying in the UK.

The Malaysia campus is a modern, architecturally stunning facility that houses lecture rooms, learning resource centre, labs and social areas all under one-roof.

The Malaysia campus is located in Educity, an education hub established by the government that is home to several established institutions.

Students at Educity can take advantage of the world-class sports facilities which include an Olympic swimming pool, diving pool, running track, indoor stadium and fitness centre.

When it comes to choice of undergraduate degrees, students who enrol in the IFP have several options.

The degrees offered in the Malaysia campus represent “signature” programmes at the University of Reading which are aligned with

Malaysia and the region’s need for talent and skills.

The degree options include:

– Accounting and finance

– Management and business

– Finance and business

– Real estate

– Quantity surveying

– Psychology

–Law

The IFP runs for 12 months, which is the norm in Malaysia for a foundation programme.

Students are required to complete a total of four modules based on the pathway they are most interested in pursuing.

A mandatory module in IFP is “Academic Skills” which is designed to help students become independent learners who are capable of finding information and examining issues by themselves.

The small class sizes at the Malaysia campus also allow students to benefit from greater personal interaction with faculty and other students.

In addition to academic skills, the IFP also helps students develop soft skills such as problem-solving, working in teams and communication, which are vital for their career development.

This is achieved, in part, through the weekly enhancement activities which include:

– Social outings

– Motivational talks

– Business workshops

– Law workshops

– IT skills training

– Team-building

All in all, the IFP at the University of Reading Malaysia provides an ideal route to a UK degree at the University of Reading whether the intention is to study at the university’s campus in Malaysia or the UK.
