Pursuing medical studies in Russia
THERE have been many cases of misinterpretation and misguidance by local universities towards the public on the education syllabus and recognition of Russian universities.
A Russian graduates shares, “I would certainly point out that there has been no issue regarding the learning process. Many parents have a misconception that they have to go for the top ranking universities for a good and proper tertiary education. I strongly disagree because individual effort is more important than the ranking of the university per se.
“A student who has no passion for studies and daydreams in class will never be a good doctor even if he manages to scrape through the examinations. A student willing to participate in lectures, tutorials and practical classes with enthusiasm will graduate to be a better doctor. As a senior medical doctor, I do not condone any behaviour of senior doctors pre-judging a medical graduate by looking at where he graduated from.
“To the public who do not know, Russia is a very safe country to live in. The incidence of robbery and snatch theft is much lower than other major cities in Europe. It is not difficult for Muslim students to look for food there, as there are plenty of options for halal cuisine and ingredients in local supermarkets.
“Malaysian students will usually stay together and form a very strong friendship due to the fact that we are far from home. This will lead to children being more independent as they have no parents to depend on – this is the best chance to grow and be independent. Students will find the joy in studying abroad as it is a once in a lifetime chance. Many graduates will remember their journey fondly as it is always regarded as the best time of their life.
“Russian graduates are versatile and able to cope well in any country they work in. I am sharing my experience with all the SPM and STPM leavers as a medical doctor working in Glasgow. I too am a Russian graduate and I have no regrets pursuing my tertiary education in Moscow.
“If given the chance to turn back time, I will choose the exact same path as I found my time in Moscow enjoyable and memorable. My colleagues in the hospital have good respect for me and I have shown excellent progress as a medical doctor here despite graduating from a far-off place called Moscow.”
