“THE Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification is widely known to be very difficult to obtain. However, the lecturers and knowledge I acquired at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia have prepared me very well for my ACCA journey,” declared Soh Hui Sin, an MA (Hons) Accounting and Business Finance graduate who also pursued the ACCA Accelerate Programme during her studies.

Soh and her coursemate Tok Jia Ying were presented with the university’s ACCA Accelerate Bursary Award worth RM1,500 each for having passed certain professional level papers in the ACCA examination.

When asked why she chose the ACCA Accelerate Programme, Tok explained, “ACCA Accelerate offered me a faster pathway to pursue my professional-level examination before graduating.”

Soh agreed, stating, “It was a wonderful opportunity for me to begin my ACCA journey.”

Heriot-Watt University Malaysia is among a few universities in Malaysia selected to offer the ACCA Accelerate Programme, which is available to its MA (Hons) Accounting and Business Finance students.

The programme allows students to complete all the professional papers required by ACCA in their second and third years of study and potentially be accredited accountants after they graduate and obtain three years of working experience.

The MA (Hons) Accounting and Business Finance offers the maximum number of exemptions for professional accounting papers by international professional bodies. These include the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and CPA Australia, as well as the ACCA. As such, the degree is widely recognised across the globe.

To further emphasise its commitment to providing its students with a truly global education, the university also offers inter-campus transfer opportunities between its campuses in the UK, Dubai and Malaysia via its Go Global programme.

MA (Hons) Accounting and Business Finance student Farah Athirah Jamil, a Go Global participant, is currently at the university’s Edinburgh campus.

According to her, “I came here to get out of my comfort zone and do things I don’t usually do, and I did. I believe that being able to conclude my studies at Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh would allow me to experience different education systems and study more holistically. The campus is huge and gorgeous. With an endless sea of green, the serenity is undefeated. What’s more, the university is well equipped with all the necessary facilities, from a huge library to an even bigger Sports Centre.”

Established in 1821, Heriot-Watt University has garnered a multitude of achievements through the years. Among others, it was placed 55th out of 200 institutions from 44 countries in the Times Higher Education Golden Age Rankings 2018.

Fifty percent scholarships are available for those who sign up for the university’s January 2020 intake. RM5,000 will also be waived for all applications for the same intake that are submitted by Dec 30.

■ For more details on the programmes and scholarships offered, visit its campus in Putrajaya during its Open Day on Dec 14 and 15 or during consultation hours from 9am to 5pm on Mondays to Fridays and 10am to 4pm on Saturdays.
