TELEVISION viewers these days are spoilt for choice, what with a record number of scripted shows available on mainstream TV as well as streaming services. From comedy and mystery to fantasy and true stories, 2019 gave us many memorable shows. Here are 10 of our favourites.

1. Game Of Thrones, Season 8
The showdown everyone was waiting for, the winter everyone was dreading. The final season of the popular fantasy series sees the war against the Army Of The Dead, and the battle for the Iron Throne. While there were many criticisms hurled at the writers, the show received much love, and even earned 32 Emmy nominations recently, the most for a single season of a TV show. 2. His Dark Materials
This eight-episode fantasy series takes place in a world where humans have animal companions called daemons, which is the physical manifestation of their human souls. Young orphan Lyra goes in search of a missing friend and discovers that a string of recent kidnappings is linked to a mysterious substance called Dust.
Dafne Keen, James Mcavoy and Ruth Wilson star in this series based on Philip Pullman’s award-winning books. His Dark Materials airs on HBO (Astro Ch 411) every Monday at 11.30am/11.30pm and is available on HBO Go.
3. Unbelievable
A teenager is charged for lying about a rape. However, detectives Grace and Karen dig deeper into the story and discover a series of similar attacks. Based on a true story, this eight-episode Netflix drama stars Toni Collete and Merritt Wever.
4. Chernobyl
We all have read stories of the terrible nuclear disaster in Chernobyl in 1986. This five-part miniseries is the dramatisation of the catastrophic meltdown at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant which saw the loss of hundreds of innocent lives. Chernobyl is nominated for four Golden Globe awards (three for acting and one for best miniseries). 5. The Big Bang Theory, Season 10
It is hard to say goodbye to “old friends” as Sheldon, Amy, Leonard, Penny, Raj, Howard and Bernadette bid us farewell after 10 years of mayhem. This final season sees the gang adjust to new adventures as Sheldon and Amy get hitched, while Leonard and Penny decide if they should have kids.
6. Euphoria
This series follows a group of high school students as they navigate love and friendships in a world of drugs, sex and social media. Zendaya leads the cast. Stream all eight episodes on HBO Go.
7. Dead To Me
Misery loves company as two women strike an unlikely friendship at group therapy. Jen lost her husband to a hit-and-run while Judy’s fiance just died of a heart attack. But things take a sinister turn when it is revealed that Judy has a dark secret. This Netflix series stars Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini.
8. The Morning Show
Another series with two strong female leads. Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon star in this Apple TV+ series as two female anchors of a morning show who have to navigate the treacherous waters of the broadcasting world.
9. Watchmen
Disappointed with the 2009 movie? This nine-episode series from Lost’s Damon Lindelof will make it better. This show takes place 34 years after the events in the graphic novel. Superheroes are treated as outlaws and vigilantism is illegal. The rising white supremacy group are hell-bent on killing cops. Unlike Bonnie Tyler, no one’s holding out for a hero. Like the comic book by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, this acclaimed series also focuses on various current and political issues plaguing the world. Regina King leads the cast. 10. The Boys
Forget what you know about superheroes. The superheroes in this series are arrogant and corrupt ... celebrities behaving badly. It is up to The Boys, a group of vigilantes to keep these superheroes in check. This eightepisode Amazon Prime Video series stars Karl Urban, Chace Crawford and Jack Quaid.
