Choosing a suitable collagen type
WHILE hydrolysed collagen is a legit term to look for on supplement labels, Dr Bitz says there are others that are confusing the consumer.
“You’ll see things like ‘Type 1 and 3’ or ‘Type 2’ on the label, but honestly, it’s just a marketing ploy,” he says.
While 28 different types of collagen do exist, differentiated by where in the body it’s sourced and its amino acid structure, Dr Bitz explains that they’re all still the same protein.
“When you ingest collagen, you’re rebuilding all of your own collagen in the body, not just Type 1 or 3, but every type.”
How do we choose an effective collagen supplement?
> Tip 1: Find out where the collagen is being sourced.
According to Dr Bitz, the source of fish and country of origin matters greatly. Most collagen supplements are usually sourced from cheaper sources of fish such as tilapia and other small fish. As a result, the purity and effectiveness of the collagen is affected.
> Tip 2: Collagen tripeptides. Normal collagen supplements are of a chain of 30-100 amino acids. It is too big to be absorbed and only delivered to our body after digestion by gastrointestinal enzymes.
