School holiday ideas

- Ming Teoh

HOLIDAYS can be expensive, especially when you need to pay for everyone in the family. Here are some school holiday ideas on what to do and where to go depending on your budget, ranging from free ($) to luxurious ($$$$).

Hiking $

Go on a trek at a nearby recreational forest. Be sure to select one that is suitable for your kids. Younger kids can try easier trails, while teenagers can go on longer ones. Always wear proper hiking footwear and bring environmentally-friendly insect repellent.

Cycling $-$$

There are several parks that cater to cyclists in Malaysia. If you don’t have a bike, you can borrow from a friend or shop, or rent one at the park.

Picnic $$

Pack a light lunch, some board games, or even a ball and head for the park for a lovely picnic.

By the sea $-$$

If you live near the sea, why not spend a day at the beach? Build sandcastles, go for a swim and play games like volleyball, beach soccer or frisbee.

Walk $-$$

Go on a heritage walk in your city. It can be a self-guided tour (do your own research online) or a guided one. There are some places within the country that offer free heritage walks.

Farm life $$-$$$

Many urban kids might not have had the opportunity to see farm animals or even know how vegetables are grown so this will be educational. There are agro and regular farms that you can visit during the school holidays. Some even have chalets where you can stay.

Theme parks $$-$$$$

Visit a theme park, go on all the rides and try out all the games. Most theme parks have a height requirement so be sure to select one suitable for your kids’ age.

Time to cruise $$$$$$$$$

If you have the budget, a cruise is a good way to keep everyone happy – kids and grandparents included. There are fun indoor and outdoor activities for kids of all ages, entertainment, and also many food options. –
