Producing future-ready graduates

-

AS part of its drive to become an analytics-driven entrepreneurial university and prepare students for the future, HELP University’s Faculty of Computing and Digital Technology is focused on training students in data analytics, the Internet of Things (IoT) and software development.

To ensure that its students are future-ready, there are compulsory free courses on blockchain and machine learning for Information Technology (IT) students.

They will also be trained in artificial intelligence, data analytics and cloud architecture. All HELP University students are also offered a free certificate in Big Data and Business Analytics, creating the A*Generation or Analytics Generation.

HELP University was awarded the Premier Digital Tech University status by the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation earlier this year for its qualifications and commitment to offering top-notch digital technology courses, as well as its efforts to future-proof its graduates by ensuring that they are equipped with the skills needed to play a role in transforming Malaysia’s digital economy.

To support this transformation, HELP University invested RM25mil in the Business Analytics and Information Centre (Batic) to encourage start-up tech innovations and incubate techno-entrepreneurship.

There are opportunities for students to work on research and development projects with the aim of commercialising the apps and technology.

Housed in this Batic centre, is the largest Bloomberg Finance Lab in Malaysia. This resource facility boosts the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting, the ELM Graduate School and the Faculty of Computing and Digital Technology in the areas of economics, business, finance and analytics training.

Dr Sien Ven Yu, dean of the Faculty of Computing and Digital Technology, said: “In our efforts to expose our students to the latest and emerging technologies, we collaborated with The Star and Mimos on final-year student projects focusing on artificial intelligence, analytics and IoT.

“Our student projects with our various industry partners have greatly enhanced student learning in terms of providing them with practical learning opportunities in bridging the gap between classroom instruction and the many challenges facing real-world problems.

“We’re also incredibly proud of our graduates and the positive feedback we have received from various companies that have hired them. This is a testimony of the high-quality teaching at our faculty.”

HELP University recently inked an exclusive credit transfer arrangement with Beijing Jiaotong University, China, so that students have the option to transfer for only two years to complete the Bachelor in Software Engineering programme.

Besides this, the university also has another feather in its hat – an exclusive credit transfer arrangement with the prestigious University of Queensland (UQ), Australia.

Diploma students can progress to UQ to complete the Bachelor in Information Technology in just one and a half years.

There are also progression pathways to UQ for the Bachelor of Information Technology and the Bachelor of Computer Science for undergraduate students who have completed one or two years at HELP University.

The Faculty of Computing and Digital Technology also offers the Work-based Learning Mode 2U1i for the Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons). Students can Earn while they Learn and gain relevant industry skills needed for the workplace.

“This 2U1i model is a practical and hands-on degree. Students who complete it have a significant advantage when it comes to job hunting after graduation, as they would have gained relevant industry experience compared to others who have just completed a normal academic degree.

“They definitely gain much more experience compared to just doing an internship because they would have worked one full year at an IT company,” said Sien.

“Our graduates also have great career prospects. With an employability rate of 90%, they find jobs within six months with top companies such as IBM, Intel, HP, Accenture, Shell, Astro, CIMB and Citibank.”

The next IT intake at HELP University is in January 2020. The university is open on weekends and weekdays this month for course counselling.
