STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY

-

A STRONG and healthy immune system can help prevent viral infection or diseases.

To maintain or strengthen your immune system, you can start by making sure each meal you consume is of a balanced diet. Increasing your intake of high fibre and fermented foods can help strengthen your stomach and intestines.

Getting enough sleep each night is also another vital way to stay healthy. Adults require at least six to eight hours of sleep, while children need nine to 11 hours.

Besides that, a quick exercise or simple body movements such as stretching your arms and legs is equally important, as it helps enhance blood circulation and lymph flow. The best time to do this is in the morning when your skin can absorb Vitamin D from sunlight.

Keeping fit physically and mentally can help us feel less drowsy, tired or depressed. To release stress, try a deep breathing exercise by inhaling slowly through your nose and exhaling through your mouth and do it for 10 minutes for even greater benefits.

While you can’t rely on these few steps alone, you can also take health supplements or nutritional beverages on the recommendation of your local pharmacist or doctor to give your body the extra boost it needs.

However, since the pandemic remains a big health threat to many of us, there’s still a possibility of contracting the coronavirus, even though you have a healthy immune system.

This is why you need to practise social distancing and stand at least 1m apart from another individual, wear a mask when going outside, and avoid crowded places.

Practising good personal hygiene should be your top priority as well as closing your mouth when sneezing.

In the event that you’re unable to wash your hands thoroughly with soap, you should use a hand sanitiser instead. Avoid shaking hands or touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Upon returning home, wash every part of your hands including up to your elbow immediately for at least 30 seconds before rinsing well. It is also important to disinfect your belongings, groceries and any surfaces too.

If it’s not necessary or important to go out, it’s best to stay at home to lower the risk of getting infected and to break the chain of infection.

When staying at home, be sure to spend some time away from your digital devices which can disrupt your sympathetic nerves and cause poor blood circulation. Open your windows every once in a while to let fresh air in for ventilation.
