Study with financial ease
Many are facing financial constraint due to the economic slowdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The near future looks uncertain, particularly for SPM, STPM and UEC school-leavers wondering if they can afford tertiary education.
accordingly, Tunku abdul Rahman University College
(TaR UC) is introducing the Covid-19 Instalment Plan, which provides greater flexibility for new students to manage payment of their first semester fees for the May intake.
The first instalment has been greatly reduced to RM265, while the second and third instalment will have a longer time frame for new students to pay.
Students can also apply for other TaR UC financial assistance or student loans after the first instalment payment to help cover their fees.
among the other forms of financial assistance is the TaR UC Student Loan Fund.
To date, there are 41 interest-free revolving student loans funded by philanthropic organisations, corporations, alumni and individuals. Since its inception in 1979, over 12,000 loan awards amounting to nearly RM 37.5mil have been disbursed.
TaR UC also partners with externally administered funds such as The Star Education Fund, Sin Chew Daily Education Fund and nanyang Tertiary Education Fund to provide scholarships.
In addition, external organisations have collaborated with TaR UC to provide scholarships or bursaries such as TaR UC – JInBODHI Bursary and Bursary for State/national Players.
On top of that, TaR UC assists students in applying for other external study grants or scholarships such as the Kuok Foundation Study Grants, yayasan Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng Scholarship, Lion-Parkson Foundation Scholarship, CIMB asean Scholarship and OSK Foundation Scholarship.
apart from financial aid, TaR UC provides incentives such as the TaR UC Sibling Discount for parents with two or more children studying in TaR UC. Potential students whose sibling(s) are current full fee-paying students in the same semester will be given a RM1,000 discount off their first semester tuition fees.
another attractive financial incentive for deserving students is the TaR UC Merit Scholarship. Established in 1997, potential students who obtain excellent results in their SPM/STPM/ UEC will be automatically offered the Merit Scholarship, which covers a partial to full waiver of tuition fees.
Effective 2020, TaR UC’s merit scholarships will be extended to UEC school-leavers who obtain 6as or 5as. Since 1997, about RM 111.8mil worth of merit scholarships has been disbursed to over 24,000 students.
TaR UC’s latest scholarship, established in 2019, is the TaR UC Sports Scholarship for students with a good background in sports.
among the many financial aid recipients in TaR UC is Li Zhi Chung from Tawau, Sabah, who was able to pursue his Diploma in Quantity Surveying in Kuala Lumpur Main Campus with support from the TaRC – Lee Kwee ann Student Loan.
“TaR UC’s Quantity Surveying qualification has high standing in the industries. However, my family could not support me financially. I am thankful to TaR UC for going out of their way to help me secure this interest-free loan,” Li said.
another recipient of TaR UC’s Student Loan Fund is Devonna anak James Steward from Lundu, Sarawak, who is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Business (Hons) in International Business.
For Devonna, being far from home was challenging at the beginning.
“I am fortunate to live with my sister near TaR UC’s main campus in Kuala Lumpur. But I still found life rather challenging, especially where finances are concerned. It was such a relief when my student loan application was successful,” she said.
Kong Inn Foong is a recipient of TaR UC’s Merit Scholarship and is pursuing the Bachelor of Creative Multimedia (Hons) programme.
“Being automatically offered a full scholarship is a confidence boost for me and motivates me to keep pushing myself to further improve my grades,” he shared.
