Direct entry for IMU students
AS an emergent field in the medical sciences, medical biotechnology (MB) uses cutting-edge expertise to manipulate the genetic machinery of any living organism to benefit human health.
The important role of medical biotechnologists can clearly be seen in this current Covid-19 viral pandemic as they are the key scientists currently devising methods to screen, diagnose and prevent the spread of this novel coronavirus.
Graduates of a medical biotechnology degree programme are qualified for fulfilling careers in industries such as manufacturing of pharmaceutical products and diagnostic tools, research and development, medical technology, data analysis, quality assurance, patents, business development, entrepreneurial platforms, site intelligence and activation, food industries, and bioinformatics sectors, where they contribute towards healthcare research.
Forensic science, another potential profession for medical biotech graduates, is an incredibly promising and fascinating subject incorporating applications of scientific methods to solve crimes.
The International Medical University (IMU) is proud to announce a newly minted, innovative collaboration with the University of Strathclyde (UoS) for graduates of the IMU MB undergraduate degree programme.
As agreed in the Memorandum of Understanding, IMU MB graduates have direct entry into the Strathclyde MSc Industrial Biotechnology or MSc Forensic Science in a 3+1* years articulation pathway. MB graduates will spend only one year in UoS to complete their Master’s degree on a 15% studentship of the published fee.
This partnership is a testament to the excellence of IMU’s MB programme which is benchmarked to international standards.
A recipient of the Times Higher Education UK University of the Year 2019 award, UoS excels as one of the top 20 UK universities for research. Nestled in the cultural melting pot of vibrant Glasgow, Scotland, UoS was also named the Scottish University of the Year 2020 by the Sunday Times Good University Guide, as well as the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for higher and further education. The institute also prides itself as an awardee of the QS five-star rating.
The UoS MSc Forensic Science is the longest running MSc Forensic Science course in the UK and is accredited by the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences. Graduates of Strathclyde forensic science form a global network of highly-respected positions in criminology. Forensic practitioners and professional scientists provide input into the programme, and students participate actively in practical crime scene and courtroom exercises.
MSc Industrial Biotechnology, on the other hand, is designed to address industry needs and stands at the forefront of developments in biotechnology and engineering.
The degree culminates in a minimum 10-week industrial placement during which the students carry out an industry-relevant project.
At IMU, the curriculum of its medical biotechnology degree is developed to meet international standards and is accepted by renowned international partner university, University of Newcastle, Australia for credit transfer into relevant programmes. Students can also complete the entire degree at IMU.
In addition, IMU’s collaboration with Bioeconomy Corporation in the establishment of the Graduate Employability, Adaptability and Reshaping (GEAR) Programme whereby IMU students participate in a series of workshops designed to enhance their interactive abilities, promote professional attitudes and develop their strength of purpose in preparation for the real workplace.
Amongst the teaching methodologies conducted in the programme include: face-to-face lectures, laboratory practicals, small group teaching (problem based learning and tutorials), workshops, computer-aided learning (CAL), seminars, presentations, industrial visits, video reviews, internships, guided reading and portfolio as well as original and independent research work.
As preparation for the workplace/internship, in Year Three, the students will participate in peer-review feedback as part of enhancing communication skills.
Commencement of this programme is in July and September. If you have pre-university qualifications and have an interest in medical biotechnology, apply online now and join the university in your pursuit of a promising and rewarding career.
If you have just completed your SPM and do not have pre-university qualification, consider enrolling in the one-year IMU Foundation in Science (FiS), the preferred foundation and direct route for entry into any of the university’s degree programmes.
