AWARD-WINNING theatre show Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical (PGL) which was set to play at Istana Budaya in Kuala Lumpur next month has been postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic outbreak.

The Enfiniti (M) Sdn Bhd’s musical, based on the 2004 film version of Puteri Gunung Ledang, was one of the highlights of Istana Budaya’s 2020 season.

With three restagings, PGL holds the record of being the longest running show at Istana Budaya.

“I’m beyond devastated as the production team and I have been working so hard to bring this

much-loved show back in full glory. But the health and safety of our cast, production team and audiences have to come first right now, as well as adherence to the

government’s rulings on gatherings, ” says Enfiniti’s Chief Dream Maker Tiara Jacquelina, who played the titular role in both the movie and stage version of PGL.

“However, I promise you that when Puteri Gunung Ledang finally goes on stage next year, it will be the most spectacular show you’ve ever seen. We’ll make it worth your wait,” adds Tiara, who is directing this restaging.

Set during Melaka’s golden age, the musical tells the story of a forbidden love affair between the Malay warrior Hang Tuah and mystical princess Gusti Puteri Raden Ajeng Retno Damilah. The show, with music composed by Singaporean singer-songwriter Dick Lee and lyrics by Adlin Aman Ramlie, won eight Boh Cameronian Arts Awards in 2006.

The all-new cast had been workshopping and rehearsing since last December. This staging of PGL was supposed to first play at

Singapore’s Esplanade Theatres On The Bay in June (PGL previously performed there in 2006) before returning home to Istana Budaya in July.

Enfiniti is currently in the process of discussing new dates, arrangements, and production details with all parties involved. Ticket holders will be contacted soon.

PGL joins a list of six major shows in March and April at Istana Budaya which have been postponed since the MCO began. Another major musical which also had to be postponed to 2021 was award-winning West End show Matilda The Musical.
